Want to use for field monitoring to check focus, lighting and composition with the HVX200. I’ve read great things about the Panasonic. Nothing on the Marshall. Trying to weigh out size, convenience, quality, cost issues.
    Thanks!

The Marshall one is on my list. I saw them at the DV Expo and they had it mounted on an HVX-200 and the image looked nice and had a sharp focus. The Panasonic ones would work to but you can moount them on the camera and if you move around it is nice to be mobile.

I wouldn’t really compare the two. The Marshall has only 480 lines, the Panny is closer to 800 lines. Also, the Panny has 2 SDI ins & outs plus all of the analog i/o, the Marshall only has analog.

What do you want, a monitor you can mount on the camera or tripod, or a monitor that you can have nearby?

I have the Marshall – use it to check focus, lighting, and composition – very happy with it.

I’ve used ’em both, it’s hard to imagine two more different products. The Marshall is a small on-camera monitor with admittedly low res (800×480) but it does very well, perhaps the best HD monitor at its price point.

The Panasonic 17″ is twice as expensive, 4x as large, twice as much resolution, has a built-in waveform monitor and split-screen capability, and is just better in every way. But it’s also twice as expensive and 4x as large! So if you need an on-camera monitor, the Marshall is the only one between these two. If you want a field monitor, the Panasonic is much better, but it’s more expensive and bigger and heavier.

Your comments are very helpful. To use the Marshall, I also need a V mount battery, charger, Noga arm, case – around $2,100 total. The Panasonic with case, Anton Bauer power option (I have batteries and charger) and tripod stand will be about $3,500. But I’ll have a better (and more bulky) field monitor plus an HD studio monitor. It is good to hear that both work well, but I think “The Panasonic 17″… is just better in every way” is what I needed to hear most.

Just be careful using that on location. My equipment gets beat up every now and then and I can see a scratch happening on a nice monitor like that.

I also had to decided between the 2 that you are and diceded on the Marshall. Since I shoot outdoors alot and and move around to get many shots the 17″ was not realistic also I could see myself scratching it. The Marshall also has the ability to use a AC plug which is like $15 and then add the battery option later.

Depending on how much you shoot and where you shoot it that 17″ sounds like a pain to take from my studio system to location and back again.

    So I bought the Marshall.

    Good Luck : )
