You will find some of the most helpful people in the business on this site. They have come thru for me countless times and generally speaking, the teacher usually learns a little something from the student.

Having said that.. If the question reflects a situation where the person asking the question hasn’t “opened the book”, the help may be a little slower sometimes. Not saying that’s the situation in your case, but that can be a factor in how quickly you get an answer sometimes. Most of these guys like to work on the quirky side of problems, always looking for bug fixes,and workarounds, not training operators in editing 101.

If your problem is basic unfamiliarity with Vegas or DVD architect, you may find a number of YouTube tutorials that will be helpful. I go there all the time. Look for the tutorials with the largest view count.

And if you see the need to re-post because you haven’t gotten any answers, please copy and paste the original question back into the discussion so we don’t have to go looking for your earlier post.

I write all of this with respect for you and your situation, because I’ve been there. I hope you have gotten the answers you sought, and if not, try the tutorials I mentioned.

Without the fade down and fade up, you would absolutely get a click at every cut. Something learned in D2 and D3 tape days. The instantaneous rise or drop at the point where two digital audio signals meet creates a transient. A better way to deal with it might be a single frame overlap at the edit point, but that’s not an option in the preferences menu, so I just set the fade as short as I can and go on.

These files aren’t 1920×1080 Pro-Res files 4:2:2. The original source of these files is out of the picture, if they weren’t, I wouldn’t have been given the files in the first place.

The best solution seems to be Prism Video File Converter. Convert before I import. Looks clean, runs fast, affordable.

Oooops! I misread my QuickTime screen. I have 7.7.2, not 7.2.2. So I’m up to date on Quicktime.

Remember.. this is a file that my QT won’t play the video but will play the audio. VCL won’t play it, wmp won’t play it.

ConvertXtoDVD works just fine to convert it to a DVD VIDEO_TS file folder and that imports into Vegas 11 just fine. At that point I have a standard def MPG file.

I believe that the files are actually exports from a FCP system. The cam originals are not available. Maybe this screen capture will help.

Yes, I’ve used Vegasaur Text Generation Wizard. It is pretty awesome, but I’m looking for the same “look and feel” of a closed caption display. That is to say.. a white font with a black field behind it, the same look of a closed caption display, but burned in.

While Vegasaur Text Gen Wiz can give me any font, size, color, shadow, edge… it can’t give me the black bars that frame the type the way a closed caption decoder does. In addition, the videos I’m working with have already been closed captioned. The text has been placed around the screen dodging pie-charts and lower third graphics. Vegasaur Text Gen Wiz created text would need to be re-positioned one by one to fit into the same screen area as the original captions.

My solution.. was to do a screen cap, using Vegas 11 preview screen, of the CC over green screen. Then chroma key that over the original video. Presto! Open captions that look like closed captions.

Thanks Steve, I checked out Caption Assistant last night as I looked for utilities that might be helpful. I don’t think Cap Ass will give me open caps that I’m looking for for this current project, but I will absolutely pick up that software the next time I start a caption creation job. It’s very slick.

Looks like the solution to the current project involves putting the captions over green screen and doing a screen capture of that. Bringing that back to the timeline and chromakeying the caption over the orig video and rendering a WMV file from that.
