You’ll have to get a 2nd video card or the Quadro 4500 to run 2 30’s.

I’ve been using the 30 for about a month and it’s excellent. You’ll really like all the screen real estate – really frees your mind up to be more creative.
The cable is a multi-purpose cable that contains power, DVI, firewire and USB so unless Apple makes a specific extension you’ll need to have it near the Mac. You might be able to add something like a Decklink Extreme which can drive the 30.

The 7800 will also run Final Touch at the same speed for 1/5th the price as the Quadro. Not saying the stock 6600 card is slow – just that the 7800 is much faster is every situation:

Walter – I think you’re talking about the Quadro 4500 – I’m talking about the 7800 – big price difference yet small performance difference. The 7800 is only $350 more than the stock card when ordered from Apple yet 2 to 3 times better Motion performance. It is not available as a retail item.
The 4500 is really designed for high-end 3D app’s like Maya etc.

Walter – appreciate the contradiction – since you DON’T own the nVidia and don’t have any professional experience with it, why even respond? I had the retail ATI800 on my last dual G5 and liked it a lot, but it wasn’t even close to the Motion performance I get with the nVidia 7800. This card is a BTO bargain and makes designing in Motion a real pleasure.
Having used both brands for years on both Macs and PC’s I can honestly say that nVidia always wins! Better performance, better drivers, more innovative company.
I also have the PNY Quadro4500 in my current dualcore XP workstation – great card! Ironically replaced an ATI 850. Go figure…

Just bought the G5 Quad myself and love it. I would strongly suggest you order directly from Apple and choose the nVidia 7800 graphics card upgrade. This is a very powerful card and works excellent with Motion. You can only buy this card as a build-to-order option – there is no retail version and other after market cards like the ATI’s are more expensive and not as powerful.
Agree with Shane – don’t buy your RAM from Apple when you order your machine – the money saved will pay for the 7800 card.

Correct – 400. You can buy a 2 drive like a :acie Big disk and get decent performance in firewire 400 but not even close to 800 which your nachine doesn’t have. I’ve played with the iMac at the Apple store and it worked fine with HDV – you’ve got to get all your footage onto the fastest external firewire drive you can find.
I don’t know your budget but you may consider exchanging for a PowerMac. I also cut on PC on a dualcore 3.2 with PPro 2 and Vegas 6 (I’m a beta tester for both Adobe and Sony). I just bought a G5 Quad for a job along with a 30″ monitor and I can tell you there is just so much more you can do in FCP – while there are features in Vegas and PPro I wish FCP had, overall it’s just awesome. I’ve edited off and on in FCP since version1 and was never really impressed until I got the Quad and the larger monitor – it’s by far the best hardware/software/OS combo I’ve ever used.

I would contact Cineform directly – they need imput from users about hardware etc. There are rumors of Decklink support as well as FCP support- don’t know if/when. The Xena cards work great with Cineform by the way.
The Cineform codecs are excellent and I’m can’t wait for Mac/FCP support myself.

Save all your pennies and buy the Apple 30″ – it’s insane – it’s changed everything I do – it really frees up my creativity having so much room. Editing – sound design – Motion – AE – Photoshop – everything is easier and better. Forget the 23 or 24″ widescreen – their nice but no comparison to my productivity on the 30. I’ve used dual LCD’s for years and currently have 2 very nice Samsung 21.3″ LCD’s and I’ll never use them again.

Kidding of course – I just bought a Quad G5 that had 2x512MB sticks installed by Apple. Once I put in my own matced pair 1GB sticks – the 512’s disappeared!?! I replaced them with a 2nd pair of matched 1GB’s and all is well – 4GB showing.
