Thanks Michael – sure you know that Paul did most of the work on the trailer – he’s a great guy – very talented.

I cut the first animatic (1st full version of film for studio screening) for the CG comedy “Barnyard: The Original Party Animals” using only Vegas. We also cut the pilot and first 4 episodes of “Back at the Barnyard” the Emmy Winning Nick series on Vegas before moving it over to FCP for codec reasons. We also did the CG comedy series Dirk Derby Wonder Jockey using Vegas for all editing AND post sound. We also remastered and remixed the IMAX 3D film Santa vs. The Snowman in Vegas all in uncompressed 1080p.
Recent Indie features I’ve done some or all work in Vegas include “A Letter to Dad” post sound. “The Passing” editing and all post sound, “SPECK” editing and sound, The Boston Strangler – main title design and sound. We will also be mixing the upcoming faith-based feature CUTBACK in Vegas 9 providing we don’t crash or have the issues we are currently having. Many other indie features I’ve done work on all using Vegas.

I’ve been working with Vegas since 2000 and been a beta tester from version 3 through 8. I’ve probably released a wider variety of pro projects using Vegas than ANY other user on the planet – from Emmy winning TV series to a $60 million studio feature – Defend Sony and Vegas all you want but why? If they’ve broken something, and they have, they need to listen and fix it!
Vegas 9e is currently unusable for any of the work I am currently doing (feature film). Now if you’re shooting HDV or XDCAM it may be working fine. Then Sony needs to come out with a disclaimer stating that Vegas should only be used with media created using a Sony product.
I hope someone at Sony is listening and I hope they can get a handle on this quickly and fix ALL the mess – I’ll be waiting patiently but will have to get my current project out with Final Cut Pro which works like a dream…
Here’s hoping…

I agree with the problems in version E – just a complete disaster! Most projects do not complete opening and I have to go to the Task Manager to shut down Vegas! Funny because before NAB we had no probs with ver C – I could put an hour of Canon DSLR footage on the timeline and edit, play, render no prob. ver D changed everything and Vegas stopped working – E is better on RAM but still a complete failure!
Who is running the Vegas ship right now? I’ve been using this NLE for 10 years and never had the problems I’m having now. How does a program get worse with age?

@Eric – who are you? I was an Adobe beta tester from Premiere Pro 1 through CS3 – Adobe rarely listens to ANY of it’s testers – even those of us working in Hollywood on hit TV shows and studio movies. This is why I left the beta program.
All Adobe would have to do post is a simple list stating that the “following features are NOT available in the demo version!” Would have saved some frustration as far as downloading and installing and testing only to find out the key features the are hawking are disabled. I’d still be bummed but I wouldn’t have wasted any actual time.
I don’t post here just to see my writing on the internet – Eric M. and I feel we have a legitimate gripe and we’re entitled to voice our opinions. And YES Avid does have a FULLY FUNCTIONAL demo version available – don’t post stuff when you don’t have the facts right!

I’m with you Eric – just installed the trail and appalled at the lack of presets! The two things I NEED to try BEFORE paying for it are locked out – so Adobe loses another sale. Very short-sited Adobe.

Concur Bill. We were talking at NAB that it was 3 NAB’s ago that RED had the cool booth showing Epic and Scarlet mock-ups that were coming “soon”. Sadly, RED won’t even pay for a booth anymore, just use the marketing goodwill of NAB in getting a 100,000 people to Vegas and saying off to the side “pssst… hey come over here to this crappy hotel and check out our stuff”.
Aside from 3D everywhere you turned – it was a DSLR show this year. Seeing Canon footage on a 15′ screen in the Canon theater just confirmed that these cameras are good enough for ANY kind of production – even with their issues. The ultimate moment for me was seeing a Zeiss 15-45 wide angle cinema zoom with a EF mount on a 7D! Thing of beauty.
Fun times…

Yeah I disagree about the mounted/tripod stuff – you really need to test it for yourself – but when shooting with the 70-200 2.8L I got better results leaving it on at all times. I shot a lot of the MED and CU shots for our feature near the 200 end of the lens and subtle shakiness and jello was eliminated – this is on a pro tripod – by leaving IS on. With it off some shots display slight tripod vibrations etc which can cause jellocam and vibrating shots.
Just my experience – not any rules here – results may vary depending on the lens and shooting situation.

We rented both the Canon and Zeiss primes on our last shoot – for motion work I’d go with Zeiss. Simple to use, smooth manual focus and a great look especially the bokeh. Not that the Canon primes were bad at all – just a pleasure to focus the Zeiss’.
We plan on buying the full set for our next feature film shoot.
