Sorry to Gary (he hates DSLR’s anyway 🙂 ) but not true in all our tests. It all depends on where the footage is going in your workflow – if you’re color timing in FCP and putting your clips on the web then he may be right. But if you’re going into a high end color suite with the goal of projecting your images on a big screen you always want the most information possible.
On the fabled HOUSE finale they transcoded all 5D dailies to HDCAM SR before any editing or post took place – overkill? I saw it on a 50 foot screen and I don’t think so.
My feeling on DSLR footage is to always “render up” to keep the information intact all the way through post. So on the Mac for instance, transcode and edit in ProRES HQ, then render out of Apple Color to ProRES 444. That way I know I’ve done my best not to degrade any part of my original files – hopefully anyway.

I have to disagree with Philip on this one – hard drives are cheap – I’d go with ProRES HQ. We’ve done a ton of testing with DSLR footage to various codecs – on the Mac side ProRES HQ is great – no reason to go lower quality especially if you plan to take into Color or similar for timing/fx.

Maybe you need to change your production name to Incite since you insist on fighting every time you post. I never said anything bad or untruthful about Zacuto. Their products are fantastic. I only stated that a similar amount of equipment from Zacuto would cost 5 TIMES as much as Indi and that;s the truth. I never said Indi was of the same stature or quality as Zacuto. I like the Zacuto stuff a lot – I may never buy any of it because Red Rock Micro for instance makes rigs that better suit me at the same quality as Zacuto for HALF the price.
We have 2 rigs from Indi that we used on a feature film and they served us well. Would we rather have had Zacuto rigs – YES! I am not here to sell my rigs – I don’t care if they sell or not.
After seeing your website I think you may better serve yourself and your clients by using your cash to improve your shooting, lighting and editing skills instead of blowing it all on overpriced gear.

Yes the similar rig as stated is over 5 grand from Zacuto – what am I making this stuff up?
Look at the Double barrel with the matte box! This would be similar to the IndiPro rigs we have – NOT talking quality here! Just amount of gear, handles, shoulder mount etc and price!

We have 2 complete indi systems with follow focus, matte box etc. Paid about a grand each – similar Zacuto rig would have been over 5 grand! While I agree indi stuff is heavy and not in the same class as Zacuto or Red Rock – the rigs served us very well on our feature.
We are selling both rigs for half price if anyone is interested. Not selling because we don’t like them – just part of the budget was to buy and sell off everything including two 7D’s and L series lenses (gone already).

YES! Spend the extra cash and get the better lens – and skip the f4 and get the 2.8L II with IS if you can. Huge difference having the better glass on on the 2.8 and the extra stops.
I have shot hours and hours with this lens and IS helps even on a pro tripod. It saved many a shot on our last film.Shots where it was off and there even the slightest tripod vibration were unusable.
So don’t cheap out! Get IS and leave it on. For handheld forget about using the 70-200 at the long end without IS – even with your rig it will be rough and the IS will make your handheld stuff look great.
Much of the fabled “HOUSE” finale was shot with the 70-200 2.8 IS and the Director and DP praised both the lens AND the IS and how well it worked!

I’ve shot quite a bit with the 100-400L – nice lens for sure – not as nice as the 70-200 2.8L but longer if that’s what you’re going for. You may want to check out a place like lensrentals.com and rent a few different L series lenses and play with them before taking the plunge.

While Nikon and Canon have parity in the still picture world, Nikon has fallen way behind in the motion picture end of it. No comparison at all sadly. The D300s is the same price as the 7D yet it is stuck in 720p land at 24fps while the Canon can shoot 1080p at industry standard 23.976.
Really not a choice at this time – I would hoppe Nikon is working on something great but who knows?
