October 17, 2005 at 11:59 am in reply to: bmd deck control

[Matt Dowling] “Thanks Gordan – I will put this into our feature request database.”

    here is another (urgent) wish:

could we get a chase function (just a simple checkmark) so that deck control plays (and jumps) the loaded quicktime in sync to incomeing timecode? would be great for sound applications and for performances.
I guess – similar to output to decks -all necessary routines are allready in the app.

    thanks,

[Walter Biscardi] ” I’m not really sure what’s different about your filter and the Levels filter included with FCP. It does a perfect job of keeping the blacks legal for HD broadcast material here. “

I just did a quick test with the levels filter because I did’nt use it for a long time:
you are right, it cuts super blacks perfect and also limits whites to 100%. but it does not bring ‘hot’ signals within legal RGB gamut range which my plugin does just with the default settings (among some other useful stuff).
but for most situations the levels filter seems to be just fine – thought according its name its intended for a slightly different use.

[Walter Biscardi] “Note that this filter does nothing for the blacks”

my ‘mastering’ plugin also takes care of the blacks. see https://www.1z1.at/plugins/
++ the workflow walter biscardi described, by color correcting the clip/sequence first, is very rcommended.

October 5, 2005 at 8:47 am in reply to: 16×9 anamorphic from 4:3 letterbox

[CharlieX] ” They just decided they want a 16×9 enhanced DVD”

so the next thing they should decide is to make new telecine in 16:9 anamorph.

bumping up your 4:3 footage to anamorph 16:9 doesnt enhance resolution and therefore
would just foolish the customers of the dvd.

October 3, 2005 at 10:30 am in reply to: how to clean video shot with +6dB gain?

you may try my plugin ‘deGrain’
which is part of my 1z1Tools I am just releasing.
    see: https://www.1z1.at/plugins/

the text there is still ragged because of my bad english – sorry, will be fixed soon.
you can download demo and try if it helps with your shot:
the satisfaction will depend on the movements in the shot.

    good luck,

  • I forgot to write:

    – I am working in PAL
    – I am using Photoshop 7

maybe there are differences to NTSC and/or Photoshop CS that are introducing these pink edges?

    kurt

  • [Glen] “Mostly they are working fine but every other one or so has an edge or two that turn HOT PINK! “
these edges mostly on right side?

I faced this problem in FCP3 the first time, wrote to Apple, sent them files to show the problem…. and every new release of FCP since then was without fix nor did I get any evidence that they tried to investigate the issue.

very annoying … I no more use PSD files with transparent layers in FCP, exporting alpha channel as seperate pict file instead.

the funny thing is… the same PSD files with transparent layers work fine in DVDSP, so someone at apple should know how to do it.

September 5, 2005 at 9:14 pm in reply to: Is Multibridge Extreme shipping yet?

thank you Luke for your reply
which reflects your (companies) viewpoint and also is interesting for me as a customer, but does’nt necessarily meet my viewpoint as a user.
but anyway its good to hear that some news seem to come at IBC – so no problems to wait some more days. I will not go there. I guess its better and also in your interest to spend money for your products instead of using it for flights & hotels.
concerning your suggestions: because 2k is a necessarity of my setup at least at the end, it doesnt make any sense to me buying an existing MB+HDLink now (not able to connect 30″ display now, no use for MB later). but using MBextreme + DecklinkHD basemodel at least makes sense for the beginning.
    thank you for that hint,

September 5, 2005 at 4:46 pm in reply to: Frame link and FCP

[Kaspar Kallas] “The other thing that is in dire need for mac frame link is the possibilty to subdevide the frames to folders – opening an 1 hour file – well it takes a while….”

    – and the ability to define the base filename of the shown dpx files within a popup menu or any other way
    – I did not manage it that FrameLink opens a reference movie – I had to export selfcontained first 🙁 .. a big waste of harddisk space. … ref-movies could open in FrameLink as readonly-folders which is ok to copy/burn dpx files to another drive.

September 4, 2005 at 9:39 am in reply to: Is Multibridge Extreme shipping yet?

[Luke Maslen] “Multibridge Extreme is not shipping yet but it is very close. We’ve been concentrating on the convertor itself and so the PCIe Bridge would not be immediately available.

If you do choose to go with the existing Multibridge,……”

finally this is essential news. after months of waiting for the “available soon – order now from your local dealer” box to rebuild my studio as planned it now seems that this waiting and postboneing of projects was not worth it.

as I understand it, MBextreme has more bandwidth capable of working in 2k also.
to come close to this, one has to add the best DecklinkHD card with existing Multibridge + HDLink, ending in a system able to run HD but not capable of 2k monitoring on LCD. if there would be a tradeIn program that path could make sense now – otherwise not.

the other bad news is that the PCIe bridge is not ready for delivery which will also add to the time a working system is available for current Mac users. but without a time table its hard to wait once more for a uncertain amount of time. maybe there is no intension at all to deliver the PCIe bridge because apple could release a new G5 with PCIe soon. that would mean adding a new G5 to the costs building the expected working environment. while such decisions would be fine from a technical point of view in terms of working speed etc., it might be kind of disaster in financial and strategic business planing for users.

so I am advocating here to get time tables makeing transparent what/when will happen from blackmagicdesigns. this is essential for everyone depending on your products especially concerning fundamental workflow changes as the migration from SD to HD is (which the new MB’s will certainly push) because one must have an opportunity to know what kind of work/projects one can do in the next months and how much it will cost. It seems to me that I defenitely have to tell my clients now that I have to quit two big HD-projects allready negotiated because I cant start working as expected within a foreseeable time frame.

as companies are getting bigger they allways tend to become more quiet about what is really going on, just leaving their clients in the dust of loud marketing or crying for shareholders … which feels arrogant for product users sometimes …
something like this, once was a strong point in my decision to quit my path with products from Avid. BMD for me is far away from such behaviour – just let us make things clear as soon as possible.
    thank you,
    kurt
