i still can’t believe the amount of replies to what was supposed to be a simple observation….fcpx running on a macbook air! one bright spark mentioned that he had been editing on laptops for quite awhile. that wasn’t the point actually. what i meant was, that using a macbook and final cut would revolutionize the industry back then. here it is 6 years later and a similar revolution is taking place. a macbook air is extremely portable, and with thunderbolt and a lot more speed than even a macbook pro of 2 years back, we are in for another leap forward. imagine having all your media stored on a server that you could access using a macbook air running fcpx and you have an amazingly compact and fast system for editing. in my mind the next logical step is to replace the laptop altogether with a 5th generation iPad running fcpx version 3……makes you think about where we’re heading…….unless you’re brain dead and just can’t think….for those folks there will always be the traditional edit suites, with all that lovely expensive equipment and monitors and couches and the chain tying your ass to the desk! hahahahahaha

actually i am fascinated by technology and how we can use it in creative ways…it’s not a fetish just curiousity. do me a favor and save this message. in 2 years time mail me back with an apology if what i’ve observed doesn’t come to pass. i don’t know why people get so upset with me when i mention that things are changing…check out gary adcocks blog and you’ll see that i’m not that far off! no go do something constructive with your time….

are you mad? an iPhone will never replace a real camera, in the same way that a synthesizer would never replace a real orchestra…but for some tasks i’m sure no one will notice! when was the last time a news cre went out in the field with a film camera and a sound man and a director and a lighting person and gaffer and a script person and a ….so on so on you get the idea! the right tool for the job is a good philosophy but why take the whole toolbox when all you need is a screwdriver!

it had to die to make room for something new….that’s how life works…the old makes way for the new! i can remember when the first version of final cut came out and i was showing a friend of mine how armed with nothing more that a camcorder with a firewire output and the latest white ibook (at the time) a person could have a full blow edit suite….something unheard of just 2 years before…he went out and spent a small fortune on a beta sp machine and a complete avid suite…he eventually gave up trying to keep it current and quit the industry to grow flowers. another acquaintance bought into the whole final cut thing and years later is the owner of one of the largest independant production companies in the country. final cut enabled him to achieve success in the industry by thinking differently and taking a chance on new technology. now it’s 10 years later and i have just seen fcpx on a macbook air….i would say we are about to see history repeat itself. it’s just so obvious to me….the old guard will be caught with their pants down. a lot of my reasoning boils down to economics…budgets have been drastically cut in the last few years and we have to figure out how to work quicker and cheaper and still deliver a product. again i will predict that the edit suites of the past will be but a memory a few years form now…..it happened in the publishing world, it happened in the music industry and we are about to see it happen in our business. there will always be the big guns, but they will be fewer and farther between. i can remember a few years back when people were saying this digital cinema thing would never take off…film would be around forever! ooops…guess what, more than 30 % of the cinemas are now digital and it’s growing monthly….just saying

i agree with you..but you can leave out a few steps….just shoot on the iPhone, send it to fcpx and finish…..it’s what i’ve been preaching for awhile now but be prepared to get all kinds of hate mail from so called “real” editors who will call you crazy and unprofessional. i’ve given up trying to convince people that a big change is coming in the way we work….i feel like noah after i built the arc and no one wanted to get in until it started raining! wait until fcpx comes out for the iPad…then the naysayers will really have something to cry about….

actually i have a lot of clients and they all love me…i’ve been doing this since you were in diapers so i think i have earned my right to my opinion and know not everyone will agree. but that’s the point, it’s my opinion and over the years my ideas have all born fruit in reality. you want profanity? go stick your head up your posterior….see i didn’t even have to swear to prove my point!

maybe its just my warped sense of humor but why is that everyone has ideas about how resolve could be bettered and are very happy to make suggestions and consequently live within its current limitations…it is a great program and we all love it! and yes the black magic team listen to their users and even implement certain ideas, yet when final cut x came up short in few areas, everyone screamed and yelled and jumped up and down like spoiled children rather than make suggestions on how it could be bettered. just an observation but it seems to me that we are all willing to let the newcomer make a few missteps along the way but don’t extend the same courtesy to the more established brands…..again i’m just speaking my mind and am not looking for arguments or criticism…..take it or leave it!
