I found a gamma correction of 1.2 helped enormously to make video look good. I think it has something to do with the way Apple codecs keep their gamma at 1.8 rather than 2.2 like Media 100 (1.8 x 1.2 = 2.2 approx)
That said I always did a levels adjustment in Media 100 rather than experimenting with the brightness and contrast in Compressor, so maybe the brightness/contrast adjustments mentioned may do the same job as the gamma – something to try though!

Couple of quick questions,1. Are you seeing this darkening only on DV captured footage, or is this effect visible on all inputs (component, composite, s-video etc) ?
2. Is playback of material previously captured OK?
3. Is the material dark on both the external monitor and the Record Window on the computer screen ?
4. Is your external monitor composite, s, or component ?
5. Have you tried removing your Breakout Box from the chain and viewing the incoming Firewire input in the Source Window only? Thanks!

December 7, 2005 at 12:38 am in reply to: URGENT: Media100 compatible captioning packageHi Matt,
Perhaps you could give us a few more details about what you are trying to achieve? Are you looking for a package to replace the “usual” Media 100 titling software (Boris, CG Studio etc), or are you looking for a “downstream” solution for caption overlay after the video leaves Media 100? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick ? -
Yes, you are right. Media 100 has released a version of its software only NLE that at present is only really useful to editors with access to a full system. But that doesn’t make it a dumb decision.
For a lot of existing users the ability to use features previously only available on the HD system like multiple video layers, the ARC feature, etc, or just the fact that it renders quicker than the hardware system make this an attractive purchase even before Media100 adds the capture / output features that have been promised. The software isn’t perfect, but it is early days yet.
It’s just a shame (In my opinion) that they chose to charge for it before it was a complete solution. A $9 incentive to buy incomplete software ? Now that really is dumb! 😉

Although I am inclined to agree, in fairness this isn’t an NLE that can’t capture, it’s a companion editor to a full NLE system.
I doubt that anyone would consider buying SW if they didn’t already have the ability to capture and conform on their main systems. At least not in this current version anyway.

November 20, 2005 at 4:35 pm in reply to: M100 files unuseable in third party apps under QT7??For what it’s worth, I have had issues with QT7 as well. However for me the files encode, they just don’t know when to stop, and often create files filled with white frames.
I was expecting Cleaner not to work and took that as a sign to buy more recent software, but I have had issues with Bitvice (see my post further down) which I wasn’t expecting. I guess the only solution is to ditch QT7 and re-install QT6.8 until things get sorted.

It used to try to convert the PAL to NTSC by fudging the framerates etc. It comes out colour and is actually watchable if your source material is de-interlaced. Things only really kick off if the frames are interlaced.
I think now DVDSP 4 can actually do a “proper” transcode of PAL and NTSC but I haven’t tried it yet!

PAL is top-field first.
And yes, try Bitvice. I find Bitvice to be a “must have” for Media 100 encoding due to the Studio RGB setting. No more washed out, overbright, grey footage.
