Clips are too dark after digitizing from DV tape
Hi Everybody,
got a strange one for you…
I’m using Media 100 7.5.1 lx with a G4 PowerMac running MacOS 9.2.2 connected via FireWire to a Sony DSR-20, and the problem is that when I digitize my DV tapes, the resulting clips are significantly darker (and lacking in both depth and detail) than the original footage (checked on both the Sony DVCam used to record it and a separate Sony DV tape player).
This appears to be a new problem, perhaps following an office move – and the hardware settings seem to be fine, as do all the other software settings (data rates etc).
Anyone got any idea what might have happened, and what I need to do to fix it? All suggestions gratefully received!

I’d suggest running s-video out of the DSR-20 into the M100 directly, and not using the firewire route.
I’m not sure, but with this old version of software and LX, you still may not be able to adjust the input levels within the M-100 input levels control panel, but s-video will at least give you another option.

Using almost the same set up a couple years ago I noticed the same quality difference between inputing to media 100 via Firewire and S-video. I swapped out every peice of equipment to find the cause. I tried a new DSR-30 deck, Media 100 sent me repalcement card, etc. Bottom line is I use s-video cable for imput.For some unkown reason the firewire washes out the blacks and washes detail.

Couple of quick questions,1. Are you seeing this darkening only on DV captured footage, or is this effect visible on all inputs (component, composite, s-video etc) ?
2. Is playback of material previously captured OK?
3. Is the material dark on both the external monitor and the Record Window on the computer screen ?
4. Is your external monitor composite, s, or component ?
5. Have you tried removing your Breakout Box from the chain and viewing the incoming Firewire input in the Source Window only?Thanks!
