As I understand it, the 16-235 issue is only part of the problem. In addition to the colourspace, Apple codecs work at 1.8 gamma. Compressor treats the mpegs to a brightness boost to overcome the gamma and shift it to 2.2 (the gamma of TVs) as this is where DVDs are generally seen.

The media 100i codec is already at 2.2, so the additional boost causes the already restricted colour range (with black at a distinctly grey 16 instead of 0) to be brightened further leaving the image flat and over bright.

Bitvice has a button to correct the gamma for the Apple codecs like Compressor, otherwise they come out too dark (they used to call it DV brightness IIRC). When encoding media 100i files with compressor, after sorting the range, applying a gamma adjust of 1.2 (1.8*1.2=almost 2.2) corrects the curve.

So, as Arthur mentioned, the new 100’s have the export option of 0-255 range, but does it do anything about the gamma?

Hi Felix,

Thanks for the response. Bunging a levels/gamma shift on the track sorts the range problem, but the fields issue is worrying as it leaves its mark on the quality of the image.

Oh for the simple days of Media 100i – one codec, one standard, no worries 😉

Hi Ajmetz,

Just FYI, I’m still running Cleaner 5.1.2 under Tiger & QT 7.2 – When I initially upgraded to QT7 I got the crashes everyone reports, but reinstalling the software codecs afterwards (and making sure the hardware codec component was gone) cured it.

I currently use Flip4mac to make WMVs nicer and faster than Cleaner could, and now use compressor for pretty much everything else (since I discovered that Compressor is set to “make everything look sh*t” by default and a few simple tweaks can make its output look great, especially for mpeg1s)

Yep, AE’ll do it, and very nicely too I’d imagine.

One advantage to the Boris route is you can use it an off-line/on-line workflow. In the last series I did, all the episodes were done in 60k draft with all the tracked blurs in place at approval stage. When sign-off was given, the footage was batched to 360 and the blurs re-rendered automatically.

Well I was suprised as well so it may well be my mistake.

My HDe shipped with two CDs both seemingly identical. One contains the software, manuals etc, the other a folder marked Media 100 codecs.

Inside this folder is a windows installer than installs three things, An AE importer, the 844/X thingy and two windows QT components – Instantmedia.qtx and Media100.qtx. The Media 100 codec is still from 2004 but from December rather than March when the ifinishtranscoder component harks from.

With this I successfully opened some Media 100i footage on my XP box running QT 7.2.

As I said I might be mistaken about this being any different (the package is certainly different than the one you download as the ifinishtranscoder as is the name of the qt component) but it is more recent (barely) and was shipped by Media 100 with a system that requires QT7 to run.

Any ideas?

Hi Sney,

Which version of Media 100 do you have? My 11.5 HDe shipped with a set of Windows codecs that are more recent than the ifinish transcoder and do work under QT7.2 on my XP PC.

I’ve just built the effect again in RED4.1 on my Intel HDe with the spline shape and with that shape exported and re-imported as a graphic – all worked as expected.

There have been scattered reports of earlier versions of Boris products not playing well with Media 100 HD and rendering black, but I am assuming that you haven’t had problems with Boris FX 8 in other uses?

You could try downloading the trial version of RED4.1 from the Boris website and trying that to see if it is a fundamental software issue or we’ve missed a setting somewhere.
