Am not a Windows guy. But here’s my 2c worth.
You need a RAID. Preferably 4 HDs striped in RAID 5. This would give you speed and redundancy.
Memory is good enough.
You can definitely see better results with a better GPU. Like a NVIDIA GTX 980 or 780.
Am not sure about your processors. But i7s are really good for video editing.

Hi Noam,
I’ve read that drive performance drops after the drive is 50% full. I usually never go more than 50-60% on my working drive. I backup completed projects onto a spare drive.

Hi Paul,
RAID 5 is probably the best for video editing. RAID 0 is faster, but if one drive fails, you lose all your data. All drives act as one big drive in RAID 0. Whereas in RAID 5, even if one drive fails, you can still continue editing. You just have to replace the failed drive and the RAID would rebuild again. You don’t lose any data.

Just to add to what Joe said, I’ve been using both the GRaid 2 drive Thunderbolt RAID0 and the Promise Pegasus R4 4 drive RAID5 drives for years now. Both are really good. At work, I use the Promise as redundancy is always good. RAID5 is considered the best for video editing where you can lose one drive and still go ahead. You just have to replace the failed drive and it is automatically rebuilt.
I use the GRaid when I travel and work on-site at golf courses for live golf coverage. I like the smaller form factor and the speed of RAID0. It’s a risk I take with no redundancy with RAID0 but I can’t travel with a bigger drive.
Both have been tremendous performers.

I used to grade in Resolve quite a lot until a while back. Ever since I bought color finale for FCPX I finish most of the grading within FCP. Am not sure if this was helpful in anyway, but I thought I’ll put it out there for guys trying to color grade within FCPX. CF is awesome.

I use a Logitech mouse with extra buttons to which I’ve assigned frequently used shortcuts. This is a wired mouse. I always liked wired ones, you don’t have to worry about the battery running out.
You can get logic pro keyboard skins that you can put on top of your keyboard. These are available for a lot of the popular editing softwares.

I’ve been using a Promise Pegasus R4 (4 drives RAID 5) for over 3 years now without any problems. RAID 5 is the ideal setup for editing as it offers both speed and safety. While it maybe a bit expensive, the warranty offered and the performance is totally worth it.
