I believe it has to be at the top level of the card’s directory.

Also, a tip I got from watching an instructional DVD on the EX1R, is to no format the card after you’ve copied the the Picture Profile to the card. Formatting the card obviously deletes everything on the card. The suggestion was to use the Camera’s Delete All Clips command. This will remove all the clips, but leave the Picture Profile in place. I copied my PP to all my cards.

It does seem odd. I have FCP X open on an LED Cinema display and yet it seems like only 10% of the space is allocated to the Project name and the rest of the 90% to a film strip of the project.

I suggest sending Apple feedback.

I understand that it grows in size as you add to it, but it won’t shrink if you delete files. But, I was wondering how you back it up. Do you create a new DI on an archive drive and them copy? Allowing you to shrink the DI, if you’ve removed a significant amount of files?

How do you mount and unmout? With Disk Utilities?

Thanks for the feedback. Steve Martin’s idea of using DI seemed like a pretty nice work flow. But I’ve never used DIs before, so it good to hear it’s working for someone.

It appears that this application moves Events and Projects in and out of the FCP X Event/Project folders. As opposed to you doing it yourself at the Finder level. Or am I missing some additional capabilities?

Steve, I was wondering if you tried, or looked at Steve Martin’s suggestion of managing FCP X Events/Projects with Disk Images?

Seemed like an interesting idea when I first read about it. But I have yet to try it. Outside of guessing (correctly) how much disk space you will need, I’m not sure what other downsides would be. Mounting and Unmounting seems simply enough. Quicker than copying, if you don’t have media inside your Event folders.

I run Lion 10.7.1 and both Sony’s XDCAM Transfer and Browser. I’ve not encountered any issues with either of them.

While Apple does not recommend it, I have both FCP 7 and FCP X on my system. Again, no issues with either.

I’m not certain Lion will provide you with any performance improvements over Snow Leopard. I haven’t noticed any. My suggestion is that you understand what you get (and loose) with Lion and determine if you need Lion.

As far as I understand, Lion is not needed for any of these applications.

I’m wondering, what does the rewrap actually do? It’s not transcoding anything? Is it?

What’s the point, or need for the complex file structure for XDCAM EX?

Also, while I do preserve the structure through initial backups, what’s the importance or advantange of keeping this structure? As opposed to keeping the rewrapped files?

That much I think I understand about the format.

My workflow is to use Sony’s XDCAM Browser to copy all my files to an external RAID 1 drive. Keep the entire directory structure in tact. I then use XDCAM Browswer to copy the files (as BPAV) to an internal RAID 0 drive for Premiere Pro. Or XDCAM Transfer Export for FCP X.

I was just wondering what if any issues there are using XDCAM Transfer to Export the media into *.mov files. Outside of perhaps an extra steps.

I use Sony’s Memory Stick Adapter and Sony’s Memory Stick Duo HG memory cards. I assume (and it may be bad to assume) that Sony wouldn’t offer these as options, if they weren’t going to work. So far, I’ve had no issues.

Sony’s 32 GB MS Duo HG cards are about $100.

I’m new to XDCAM EX, so sorry if I’m missing something here.

I use Sony’s XDCAM Transfer tool to export the file to *.mov files, which work fine in FCP X.

What are the limitations of using the *.mov files?
