    Craig,

Your response prompted me to go back and read Luke’s question. I’m afraid I didn’t pay enough attention to his question. Since he asked what would I like to have put back before I’ll use it again. I missed the “before I’ll use it again” part.

I didn’t realize that Apple had published Motion and Compressor manuals. I hadn’t bothered to look. That is odd.

Apparently the point of my post was not obvious. I attempted to make a humorous comment relating to Ben’s statement that he will most likely spend his time discussing FCP X in the FCP X Techniques forum, as opposed to this one. The humorous part was the reference to one of the Godfather movies. (forgot which one)

Honestly, I’m sorry if you didn’t find it humorous. I certainly meant to disrespect to Ben either. But, I can see how someone could take an attempt (especially a poor one) at humor to be disrespectful. Again, sorry.

Although, I’m not sure I understand your comment about whether I work for Apple. Not that I’m offended. I just don’t quite understand it.

[Ben Holmes] “I’ll stick to the techniques ones from now on.”

I bet somebody is gonna post something that gets you back here.

Every time you think you’re out, they draw you back in.

    You mean like …

    Open Scopes
    Vectrascope
    Waveform
    RGB Parade
    RGB Overlay

    Snapping (on/off)
    Skimming (on/off)
    Audio (on/off)
    Add Marker
    Next Marker
    Render Selection
    Home
    End
    Next Edit
    Inspector
    Hide Waveforms
    Zoom (in/out)
    Zoom to Fit

    Hide Browser, Show Browser
    Filmstrip
    List

    Keyword Indoor
    Keyword Wide
    Favorite

    Save (Please?)

My list of suggested voice commands may not be the best example. But, I think there are probably commands that could benifit from using your voice.

It may not be useful for some users. Such as those (many I would imagine) who have become so proficient utilizing a keyboard and all it’s modifiers to control the vast amount of what they need to get done. I can see where having a voice version of the command would probably even slow them down.

A change like this reminds me of Apple’s Mighty Magically Mystical Trackpad. (I couldn’t think of 4 T words) I tried to like it. I spent an entire 3 or 4 minutes of extensive user testing. It didn’t work for me. I’ve been using a mouse for too long. I don’t care how much better and faster a trackpad is over a mouse. I don’t care how much I could benefit from all kinds of exciting new gestures. I’m too set in my User Interface ways. Sure I can drive on the other side of the road if I have to. But I run into a lot more stuff doing that. So I’m not moving to Singapore.

I’ve been using Siri on a 4S for messaging now for several days and I’ve found it very useful. It’s not perfect, but it works good enough for the vast majority of my needs. (I haven’t asked it to open the pod bay doors yet, but I want to) And because I never won any texting championships, I actually find it a better solution than Appls’s touch screen keyboard. I can do it with one hand and I don’t have to look at the phone while I’m doing it. It’s the only way I’m texting now. (but then, I don’t mind talking alone) Unless Siri gets it so wrong I have to correct it. Still, overall, faster for me.

While there are some changes that I may never be able to make, I can see how voice commands could be useful. Especially for repetitive tasks that don’t have a keyboard shortcut (because I was too lazy to create one).

But, it would have to work really, really well and it would have to be really, really fast. And I’ve never used a computer that’s fast enough. Hey, maybe the next Mac Pro! (oops)

Anyway, I think it’s more than an interesting idea to debate. (and boy, is this a great place to debate stuff)

I assume you’ve already tried the usual things like trashing preferences, repairing disk permissions.

What about a clean install of FCP X?

Here’s a list I’ve been keeping. I have also been feeding it back to Apple. I realize some of it might be trivial. I’m sure some of it is simply my lack of knowledge of FCP X and I might be able to already do what’s on this list.

    Event Library:
    EL: Re-link files
EL: Event and Project Library Manager, pick and choose what opens and what doesn’t.
EL: Remove disks from the Event and Project Library that I don’t (ever) need.
EL: Rename a clip, option to rename all instances of a clip.
EL: A column to show Keywords, as opposed to the twirl down.
EL: A column for A/V In Use.
EL: A column for Finder file name.
EL: A column for Finder location. (especially it’s it’s offline)
EL: Remove an item without Move To Trash. (Trash makes me nervous)
EL: A way to get back to the list of clips where I left off. (sometimes it jumps to 1st clip)
EL: A way to browse media not imported.

    Editing:
Edit: View an audio waveform in the viewer. (or a bigger view when scrubbing in filmstrip)
    Edit: Keyframe time remapping.
    Edit: Keyframe color correction.
    Edit: Normalize audio.
    Edit: Close Timelines.
Edit: Timeline Inspector, see what event the clip came from.

    Color Correction:
CC: Ability to move either the Angle or Amount by scrolling or entering numbers. (more precision)
CC: Rename each color correction, as opposed to Correction 1, 2, 3
CC: A levels style adjustment for RGB.
CC: White, Gray and Black Eyedroppers.

    Settings:
Settings: Frame export. It always seems to default to PNG.
Settings: Default Scope, it always seems to be histogram.

    Workspace:
Windows: Either, move the Scopes to second window/display, or make the scopes smaller.
Windows: Allow the Events window to be adjustable, on Second Display, it’s full screen.
    Windows: Save user defined workspaces.

    Keywords:
KW: Create, edit and manage collections of keywords by Project, or Event. (like and editor)
KW: A way to save and reload them after trashing preferences.

    Miscellaneous:
    Misc: External monitoring.
Misc: Background Render, Alert for done. (even outside FCP X)
Misc: Have Command+Tab take me to the Mission Control Space, not bring the open dialog box to the current space. (bug?)
Misc: Larger area (or movable pane) for viewing Project names.
Misc: A better user manual, with chapters.

Are you concerned that the Disk Image will encounter and issue? So that everything in the image file could be lost?

I guess I never thought about that. I’m not much of a disk image expert. Is that a general concern with Disk Images?

I suppose you could duplicate the DI to another location periodically. Or if you are in the habit of duplicating projects for backup or versions, you could duplicate them to another location.

    Thanks for the clarification.

I did send Apple feedback to add a global naming option to the current method.

    Steve,

If you import in HDV and work in ProRes … Aren’t you transcoding to ProRes before editing? Did I get confused in your workflow description?

Well, that’s what I discovered. I just wondered why you would want to rename a clip, but not have it get renamed globally. I’m sure there is a good reason, I just don’t know what it is.
