  • Rename Clips, Doesn’t Really Rename Them

Perhaps I’m the first to realize this …

If you rename a clip, it only renames the clip from that point forward.

I had some clips in a Timeline. Then, I did a batch rename of the clips. This changed the name of the clips in the Event Browser, but not the clip in the Timeline. The clip in the Timeline had the old name. If you click on the clip in the Timeline with the old name and Reveal in Event Browser … It points to the clip with the new name. Because the clip no longer exists in the Event Browser with the old name.

Is the a bug? (I hope so)

If it’s not a bug, why would you want this feature?
Why would you want to rename a clip, but only from the point in time when you renamed it?

I didn’t try it, but I guess I could rename a clip, drop it in a Timeline. Rename it again, drop it again, over and over. I’ll have one clip with one name in the Event Browser, but a bunch of clips (same one) but with different names.

    Odd.

FCPX treats the clips in the timeline as separate entities, just like FCP7.

You can name the clip in the timeline, and it won’t change what’s in the browser but FCPX is smart enough to know those clips are still connected. If you need the name replaced, replace the clip in the timeline after matching back.

The clip in the timeline is just an instance. You’d need to rename in the Event Browser before dropping into a timeline.

Well, that’s what I discovered. I just wondered why you would want to rename a clip, but not have it get renamed globally. I’m sure there is a good reason, I just don’t know what it is.

This is a silly reason, but let’s say you wanted to get extremely granular in your timeline, you could name each clip something different to better describe the shot. Or maybe you want to name it something that describes the scene better. Goofy, but it might help someone. You can always match back to the clip in the browser and replace or change the name back to the original in the inspector.

It would be nice to be able to have control, like an option that says “reset clip names to match browser” or something.

Sounds like a feature request! 🙂

    Thanks for the clarification.

I did send Apple feedback to add a global naming option to the current method.
