Scott, you might do what I just did. Swap out your HD. I now have a Seagate Momentus 5400 RPM 100 GB drive + 1 GB of RAM. Plenty of room for all the stuff.

Is the dark green FULL bar checked in your Sequence > Render menu? If not, it will render after it is checked.
If so, you may want to break the link to the render file and re-render it at FULL. Break the link by resetting opacity.

I dont’ think there are any approved SANs that work with FCP reliably, except Xsan. I work with Xsan and believe me, it’s awesome. It’s not that expensive if you take into consideration what it actually does. No wonkiness as the other poster noted: machines don’t crash, you can capture from multiple stations to the Xsan, you can all grab the same media files at the same time and play them, trim them, loop them, etc. The most expensive thing is the fiber switch. Once you have that, it’s very reasonable. Three folks could work on a single Xserve RAID, no trouble. Talk to a VAR and see what they can cook up for you. Really. It’s a great investment. And just think of all the RT you and your friends will get with DV. You’ll also be able to start working with HD very easily. Think about it. A little investment up front will save you more over the long run.

I’m even more of a hardcore than Matte. I say, ALWAYS hook up your speakers to your Capture Card, Io or DV Deck and NEVER the Mac (even though you can tweak your presets to do otherwise). Just ’cause you can do something, doesn’t always mean you should.
Why not monitor speakers attached to the built in? Downsampled audio is not what I want to monitor. I want to monitor the pure, unadultrated signal coming from the media file. The only way to do that is to monitor through the device, not the Mac–where your pristine 48 kHz audio is resampled at 44.1 kHz. It also adds overhead to the processor–and that’s never good.

Targa card? What is this…1999? heh heh. Seriously, though. I doubt the Targa would be supported past FCP 2, OS 9.2 and QT 3.0.2 or the like. You’re much better off getting a modern capture card that works with FCP 3 and up. The Decklink cards are very reasonable.
If you are a hardcore, I believe Ken Stone’s site still has up all the prefs you would need to set for a Targa 2K. How do I know this? I wrote ’em up…;-)
