What is needed for Targa 2000 dtx on FCP
Posted by Robert Woodcock on May 6, 2005 at 9:55 pmI just purchased a 500 mhz G4 that has both OS9 and OSX installed. I have an old Targa 2000 DTX card that was in my discreet edit system before I upgraded it to a RTX. Can I use the T2000 with FCP and if yes what OS and FCP version is needed?
Thanks …Bob

May 7, 2005 at 12:11 amTarga card? What is this…1999? heh heh. Seriously, though. I doubt the Targa would be supported past FCP 2, OS 9.2 and QT 3.0.2 or the like. You’re much better off getting a modern capture card that works with FCP 3 and up. The Decklink cards are very reasonable.
If you are a hardcore, I believe Ken Stone’s site still has up all the prefs you would need to set for a Targa 2K. How do I know this? I wrote ’em up…;-)

May 7, 2005 at 12:32 amMan, I remember when I lusted after that card. I ended up with a Radius system that never bloody worked properly. And the cost of hard discs just to 7MB/s!
Sorry, just makes one thankful for what we have now.

May 7, 2005 at 12:34 amKevin’s pretty much right. I believe FCP 2.5 was the last release to support the Targa card. THe issue was the same as with Win2000 or XP – no new drivers written by Truevision/Pinnacle.

May 7, 2005 at 2:05 amThanks for the info. This is sort of a legacy machine. I have discreet edit and Pinnacle Chrome but because everyone seems to talk FCP I wanted to see what all the hype is about. Version 5.0 does a lot and if I wanted to start from scratch, that would be the way to go. Since the G4 500 will not do HD it makes sence for me to see if I can get it to work with what I already have. Mini dv is great but I would have more of a market for this system if I can connect it via component to my UVW1800. Even if I have to use FCP version 2.0

May 7, 2005 at 5:50 amRobert, you’ll no doubt hate FCP 2.0 if coming from edit 6.0 (just like the reverse would be true – DVision Online 2.0 vs FCP 5.0). It’s probably not a fair comparison, nor do I see the point, since you won’t be seeing what all the hubbub’s about in a 4 year old version of software. While I’m only now moving on to FCP myself, iirc, anything before 2.5 was not to be taken seriously. And as the thread on the edit forum shows, there are more than a few who aren’t taking it seriously even now (myself NOT included). If 5.0 is a nominal upgrade from 2.0, you might want to consider it.
