You also need a capture card and uncompressed video deck, like DigiBeta to output uncompressed video. Otherwise, you are stuck with the DV Codec. Hopefully, that is clear to you.

Make sure you are properly monitoring the signal as well. Connect the speakers to your deck, and NOT the Mac. Many self-trained editors mistakenly do not monitor external audio or video. Audio coming from the computer port is downsampled from 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz on the fly, which sometimes causes pops and clicks that aren’t on the source tape or the media file–especially on slower rigs.

Put the RT Pop Up menu to Safe RT at High Quality and Full Frame Rate. Hope that helps.

Looks like you’re using a PowerBook. Do you have a PCMCIA card separating the bus between your deck and your external FireWire drive. That may be it.Kevin Monahan

Good idea Dave. That makes it bulletproof. If I make any sequence other than a DV sequence, when launching a new project, I always delete the existing sequence and make a new one right away. This new sequence will be based upon whatever is in the new Easy Setup or new Sequence Settings.

Bill has a good point, however, for the powerbook, it’s actually a PCMCIA card. A PCI card would go into a tower. Your deck and external drive will then be on a separate bus.

It might be because your speakers are not hooked up out of the deck/cam. Many people hook up speakers out of the Mac, but the manual indicates that you can monitor high quality audio through your DV device. If you are monitoring sound from the Mac speakers, it is downsampled on the fly to 44.1 kHz.
Sometimes on slower macs and with low RAM, the audio downsampled on the fly will display this behavior. Another reason might be mis-matched sample rates between shooting and capturing. Did you mistakenly shoot at 32 kHz?
