Posted by Doug Normington on June 28, 2005 at 7:26 pmHi,
I used easy setup to setup DV NTSC. I amusing firewire to digitize on a DV tape. It digitizes. I throw it in the timeline and red line appears indicating the need to render the entire 30 minute clip … 2 Hours!
I don’t see how to set this up any differently.
What am I doing wrong?

June 28, 2005 at 7:28 pmThis happened to me when I was a FCP beginner, but then we didn’t have Easy Setups.
Weird as it sounds, something went wrong with the settings you are using. Could you please detail both your capture prefs and your current sequence settings (CMD + Zero)? Something there is not matching.

June 28, 2005 at 7:35 pmYou probably already had a project open and then used your Easy Setup to make the DV-NTSC Project. That means the Sequence 1 that was already in your project is still set to what you had BEFORE you did the Easy Setup. Easy Setup affects what happens AFTER you use it. Sounds weird I know, but since FCP by default puts one Sequence in your project, it’s now set wrong.
Either just create a new Sequence and all will be well, or just open that Sequence 1, go up to Sequence > Settings and then load the Sequence Preset for DV-NTSC.
Note that any footage that’s already in your sequence will most likely still show the red render bar. You need to remove and replace that footage for it to work correctly.
It’s one of those gotcha’s you’ll find in Final Cut Pro.

June 28, 2005 at 7:59 pmThat fixed it. thanks
One more snag. I can see audio on the audio tool but I cannot get it to be audible. I have audio through the computer with Itunes I just tried it. but no audio with FCP…

because you’re sending audio and video out via Firewire. You either need to turn both off or hook up an audio device to a firewire device, like a camera or a deck.

June 29, 2005 at 1:35 amYes, this is common. It is because most people don’t know that in a standard DV Firewire Config you have to have your speakers connected out of the deck or camcorder. Your video monitor should also be connected this way at all times.
I like to connect my mac audio outputs and deck’s outputs to a mixer so I can hear audio whether it is coming out of the deck or the mac. This is ideal because you can hear audio in any scenario and in any application. A simple Y-split adapter also does the trick.
Most people don’t work this way, but they should. Check out proper system config in the manual–you might be surprised that your system is not set up according to spec. I would wager that most people are set up wrong for working with proper monitoring for audio and video.

June 29, 2005 at 5:27 pmOne thing that is helpful is to go to the user preferences and turn on (Prompt for settings on new sequence).
It will help you double check yourself for sequence settings. You can do this for projects as well.Dajen Productions

June 30, 2005 at 9:50 pmGood idea Dave. That makes it bulletproof. If I make any sequence other than a DV sequence, when launching a new project, I always delete the existing sequence and make a new one right away. This new sequence will be based upon whatever is in the new Easy Setup or new Sequence Settings.
