300 DPI is way overkill. Suggest you optimize your scans at 72 DPI before importing into FCP. If you need to scale the image up, just make sure the frame size can handle it.
By not optimizing images properly, all kinds of anomalies can take place.
And Kurt, please don’t take my list personally, just trying to help out. Many people (wrongly) don’t use a monitor, nor do they pay special attention to the RT Pop Up menu nor the Sequence>Render bars – both of which are crucial to image quality for rendered fx. Glad to have a vet like you aboard. 😉

Make sure to tell them that they are pushing the envelope using such a small size. If it looks decent on the new encode, they should be patting you on the back. I tend to stay away from anything less than a point size of 24.Kevin Monahan

Things are looking great with HDV on a HD Monitor, but it sounds like you don’t have one eh? Well, that’s the only way to see your true quality.

WIth HDV, you’ll need a video capture card to see the image on a video monitor. If you read the article, you can also enable the high quality preview right in QuickTime.
Many of us know that the Canvas is “fooling you” right now. It is only displaying about 1/4 of it’s true res. Anytime you have render files you’ll be confused without a full FCP System. If you are not operating FCP with a video monitor and speakers being fed by a video deck, then you are working on an incomplete system. With an incomplete system, there’s bound to be confusion.
Pony up some bucks for a card and a monitor and all will be well.
IOW, you are worrying about a problem that does not exist, you are merely being duped by what you see in the Canvas. Which is NOT reality. This really has been a problem for new folks since FCP 1, so this is nothing new.

In addition to the size of your project, you can also experience sluggish behavior If most of your media files are lengthy. FCP prefers short and discrete clips over capturing and subclipping entire rolls. Getting rid of unused media via the media manager should help a lot. I’d blow away clips that you will probably not need.
