Another thing you can try is to dissolve between the moving stills. When doing so, drag the keyframe outside the clip’s in and out points so that during the dissolve the pictures continue to move. I use this technique very often. You won’t see any abrupt “stops” with this method.

FireWire drives are satanic. I would suspect them first, especially when you are doing captures that are so incredibly lengthy. Any way you can break these up to 20 minute captures?

Tweak the velocity “handle” (really a purple dot) on the bezier handle to adjust the easing of a stop. Might wanna simultaneously loop it in QuickView and zoom in on the handle in the Canvas while you tweak. This technique is in my book….have not seen it elsewhere.

Certain assumptions are made due to the problems that you are having, you see, I can’t see your system (or your resume) from here. It is you who should not be upset by these assumptions. Every piece of “help” here makes certain assumptions. That has to happen.

Note that I did not point the finger directly at you – whatever it “sounded like” – I didn’t do that. I worded it as “MOST people” and do this often because it is really true. MOST people do not monitor correctly, and I’m sorry you took my “tone” the wrong way – I’m a long-time FCP instructor, wrote a book, etc. so my advice is from that POV. I do know what I am talking about and am sensitive to the common problems people make whatever their experience level is.

About your graphics: Sure, you should scan at 300 DPI, but after doing so you should bring it into Photoshop and optimize it at 72 DPI (the target resolution of raster graphics) – with a frame size that is 2 or 3 times the native frame size of DV. How to? Just enter the new frame size and bit depth in the Image Size dialog box in Photoshop. I’m not just pulling this out of thin air, this is a known and documented technique in both the Avid and FCP training programs.
A 300 DPI image brought into FCP is interpolated as merely a larger frame size, not more bit depth. This can blow up your image much larger than it needs to be…overkill! By avoiding the step of image optimization for television, you are getting less performance, less RT and will tax your processors to higher levels. By not optimizing your images, sure it will work – it’s just not as efficient as doing things correctly.
Regarding Photoshop for video, and for further research you might try reading some of the articles on kenstone.net, read Richard Harrington’s book on Photoshop for video, any of Tom Wolsky’s books or check out Ch. 14 of my book.

The only time I use text smaller than 24 points is when I use it for a design element. It’s not meant to be legible in that instance….it’s too small or garbled – but hey, looks cool in certain instances as a pattern or a texture.
