  • Thanks Tim,
As a software engineer myself (I changed careers about 12 years ago but still love to play with video) I understand what you mean. Admitedly I haven’t read Adobe’s license for the beta version of SB, so after your post I decided to take a read through it because Adobe’s SB beta download is so out there and available I figured it was more of a ‘shareware’ community feel (not that it’s free – just that Adobe understands that the more systems that the beta is tested on the better, and, the Adobe user community seems to be fairly open and I believe they would report any bugs, etc. that they may find..)

I was just wondering if anyone has been using it and had good results with some of the new features, namely the multiple tracks… I am a fairly light user of SB but the one thing that I would like is the ability to have separate tracks.. I kinda figured that I might use beta CS4 until CS 4 was out then upgrade as opposed to purchasing Audition. Actually, I’d probably just wait anyway – I mean, it’s not like this is a business for me or anything – if it were, I’d have gotten Audition long ago..

So, when I went back there to take another look at the download page and read the beta license I saw the link to Adobe’s open Soundbooth Beta discussion forum. I’m sure I’ll find my answer there..

Fortunately, Adobe isn’t as closed as Micro$oft seems to be in terms of beta testing…

    Hi Alan,
My “answer” is more a Photoshop answer and I’m not sure if you care how the images are scaled but in Photoshop under the File menu, Automate, you can choose ‘Fit Image’ to automate rescaling your images. So you can record an action where you Fit the image into whatever Height & Width you need then set up an automation batch to do this for you. I believe that if the image is Portrait and your ‘Fit into’ dimensions are set up for landscape (or vice-versa) then the ‘Fit Into’ feature will set the new height to your constraint settings and the aspect ration will be retained so you’d have space on the left and right of the image.. Not sure if that’s what you want or not though..

Another idea is to see how well you can use a luma key… Probably throw a levels or curves (or both) effect on the footage first to brighten up the background and make sure that the “talent” still looks properly exposed. May not work depending on your footage..

But I’m sure that’s not really where your problem lay.. You mentioned that the spill is what your problem is.. That, I’m afraid to say, is not what this Noob knows how to handle with good results yet. I normally just try to do the same thing 5 different ways and see which gives the best results (in the best time)..

    Hi Christian,
I’m a novice for sure, but I think that you should be able to corner pin the screen (motion track) then use that to put a copy of the footage layer into. You could offset the time a touch then precomp that and do it again – not sure if that will work..

But also play around with the Echo effect.. If there’s movement from frame to frame that may do what you want..

But remember, I’m also a novice.. Just stating a couple of ideas that might hopefully help or spark a thought that will work for you..

My understanding of ‘The Bullet’ is that it is a DVD of tutorials.. Including the exploding text in the intro.. If not then I know that I read that there is a tutorial video that they (Andrew) sell that covers the exploding text..

In the mean time, check out his tutorial on the exploding planet… It really helped me to start understand the Shatter Effects various settings..

What Joey posted is what I would do, but I know that Andrew Kramer has a tutorial for ‘Spray Paint’ – not a transition but just the effect which should get you started if shooting as Joey described is not an option..

The tutorial is ironically named, ‘Graffiti Writing’ and can be found here:

  • Thanks for the explaination Darby,
I think at one point I used to know that stuff.. But then I became a computer programmer and don’t really have to use math anymore! lol. jk. But seriously, I’ll try the ‘Alpha Add’ blend mode – it makes sense anyway..

    I appreciate your time!

  • Thanks Todd,
I can’t really afford Shine right now – this is just a hobby for me – I had a hard time buying the Creative Suite Production (well, my wife had the problem!!!) Maybe I’ll try the free trial just to see if it would work the way I want.

But, you said something that makes me think of another way to look at it – I haven’t tried to put any effects on the traveling matte.. There may be something there.. Thanks for your suggestion!
