  • CS3 HDV – Audio and Video out of sync.

Posted by David Distinti on April 4, 2008 at 2:55 pm

I imported footage (HD-1080i) from my Canon HV20 into my PC (CS3 Capture) via the standard issue on board firewire port. When playing back the footage in my timeline, the audio and video start drifting after so many minutes. I have no third party capture/playback baord, etc. I think I know the answer but thought I would throw this question out there just in case I was wrong.

Do I need a third party card, such as a Matrox RT2 card, in order to keep both audio and video in sync among other things. If that’s the case can ayone recommend a board that’s in the $1200 price range. ‘Sounds like the Matrox board, RT2, might be too finicky?

Or is it simply anothet problem?

    Here’s my system’ specs:
Dell XPS630 w/quad core processors (6600), 4 gigs of memory, Inernal Seagate SATA drive with 79 mb tested performance. Software: CS3 v3.1.1. Audio and video are recorded onto the same drive – drive is seperate from the system drive. Audio is supplied via the inernal audio card.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
I have the same camera. Is the footage you imported HD or SD – I’m assuming HD due to this post’s subject..

Anyway, I don’t really have an answer for you as when I capture HD via CS3 it does so in MPG format with keyframes that keep the audio and video in synch.

but here’s what I do – sort of a “best practice” that I started way back when using Premier 3 or so..

I capture clips that are 5 minutes or less. CS3 makes this extreemly easy with the batch capture in conjunction with the import batch list. I basically wrote a macro in MS Excel to create the csv file for me given a few parameters, then I import, click, walk away. After it’s done I simply drag all of the clips to a new sequence. I’ve found that doing this (even with SD footage imported as avi) has no problems with the audio getting out of synch.

I don’t know if this helped or not but hopefully it did..

Oh, if anyone wants the macro I can neaten it up a bit and send it out upon request..

    Hi Kevin

Is there any chance you could send me a copy of that macro, it sounds like a very handy bit of code.

    Many thanks
