i’m not sure what you meant by ‘over lay’ but if you mean video monitoring through you quadro fx1500 video card, then you would set that option for video monitoring in the video preview pref of ae. if it is available it will show up in the output device pulldown, and you will be able to set options for previewing, although i’m not sure you can monitor through your video card, since you are already preview though it in the preview window.

i’m not sure if this would save you much time over cutting-and-pasting, but dan ebbert has a script on his site, motionscrpit.com, that will create a text layer from each line of a text file that you point it at.
here’s the link, you will need to paste the script into a text editor and save as a .jsx file (you can save as a text file and change the tag to .jsx):

you will also need to export your slides as a text file of maybe a word document and then save as a text file.
personally, i think i’d try cutting-and-pasting from power point to ae.

i created some nice ‘light streak’ shots from some night fly-by footage over a city a few years ago. the footage moved rather slow, so i spead it up, used time-remapping, frame blending, echo and glow to achieve the feel of slow shutter speed.
if you were to shoot slow-mo you could probably achieve what you are looking for. i would definitely do a few tests before committing to doing-it-in-post, that can get you into a some trouble.
re:vision has a plugin called reelsmart motion blur that could help too.

what codec was your quicktime movie using? ae doesn’t handle temporal (also called interframe) compression well (wel it handles it, its just a lot slower to work with). some ccodecs will allow your to turn interframe compression off, like lossless animation, which calls it compression keyrframes. but you could also render to an image sequence to avoid interframe compression.
but this only make a noticeable difference in working with footage (like scrubbing), you would not see much of a difference in rendering. so like dave said, ae is not realtime. and opengl can help, but there are only about a dozen opengl accelerated effects, although there can be noticeable boost if you are using motion blur and blending modes. also if you preview in opengl, you’ll also want to set your render to render in opengl (use the render settings from the render queue to enable), there are slight differences in how opengl renders and if you don’t use it or your final render you may wonder why the final is different fromt he preview.

it should be pretty simple. the pixel aspect ratio conversions will be handled by ae as long as you have them defined correctly in your other comps, and if you were using hd presets, then they are. your 16:9 hd comps will scale down to 16:9 widescreen sd comps easily.
since you are scaling the footage, if you have any captured or rendered footage that is interlaced you will need to make sure that ae is interpretting the footage as interlaced, with the correct field order (you can use the interpret footage settings to make adjustments if needed).
frame rate can be adjusted at render… if you have 24p hd, you can put that in a 24p sd comp, then when you render, click the render settings and and change the frame rate to 29.97, set to render fields with the appropriate dominance, and set the pulldown cadence (the first option is fine). ae will then render your 24p as 30i with a pulldown. note that you don’t necessarily have to convert 24p to 30i… if you were making a dvd, for instatance, you could create a progressive widescreen dvd that would play fine in a 4:3 interlaced tv.

there have been reported issues with some older quicktime components givine ae7 fits. i noticed that you have media100 installed, you might make sure that you have the latest quicktime components from them.
if you want to determine if third party quicktime components are the problem, go into the library (not the system library)/quicktime and move the components to a folder on you desktop. do the same in users/(username)/library/quicktime. then try opening ae7.
if it works try putting back only the componenents you need, and try opening ae again. if it works, great; if not, then you’ll need to try to find updated components.

image sequences are good place to start and are compatible in almost every system, so you should be able to export one from other software easily. image sequences, by nature, can not use interframe compression.

if you have an nle, you would normally render out clips in ae and edit them in the nle. you’ll much more easily be able to assemble and work with clips in an nle than in ae.
same with audio, you would normally lay your audio in the nle, you’ll have better controls and option for mixing.
there are still some workflow issues you will need to work out. you will want to make sure you convert your rgb ae renders to yuv or 601 color space when you import into you nle. additionally you’ll want to find an intermediate codec to be the go between from the nle and ae. usually, you’d like to stay lossless or uncompressed, but if you can’t afford the disk space, try a codec that is native to your nle. the trick is to try and avoid compressing and recompressing a clip as much as possible.
you’ll find many issues with different media standards, aspect ratios, frame rates and workflows as you progress, good luck.

when using codcs with temporal compression in ae, you will force ae to work very hard to create the frames between the compression keyframes.
you will not experience these problems if you use codecs that do not use or have the option to disable interframe or temporal compression.

i think it probably easiest to keep things square in photoshop and make sure the square pixel images get handled correctly when taken in to ae and premiere (and any other software that uses non-square pixels).
it sounds like dvcprohd will become the standard broadcast preset for you in both pp and ae, the only issue my be if you have some systems that can’t do 16:9 (you should be able to get sd widescreen into your hd workflow pretty easy, jsut make sure your field settings are correct, you don’t want to scale with fields, you can re-add fields in ae at render time).
the most important thing is to make sure the various pixel aspect ratios are handled correctly when they are imported, if they are adobe’s software should handle the conversions seemlessly.
