HD to SD conversion
Hello,
If I am creating animation at various HD resolutions and HD frame rates, can I then bring the final comp into AE and render out a SD 720×486 comp to use the same HD animation in SD 16×9? Do the different frame rates cause a problem? Is interlacing a problem? How about the diferent pixel aspect ratios? Am I over thinking this? Is this a simple process or do i need to re-render the animation files in SD and re-composite which could take a long time.

it should be pretty simple. the pixel aspect ratio conversions will be handled by ae as long as you have them defined correctly in your other comps, and if you were using hd presets, then they are. your 16:9 hd comps will scale down to 16:9 widescreen sd comps easily.
since you are scaling the footage, if you have any captured or rendered footage that is interlaced you will need to make sure that ae is interpretting the footage as interlaced, with the correct field order (you can use the interpret footage settings to make adjustments if needed).
frame rate can be adjusted at render… if you have 24p hd, you can put that in a 24p sd comp, then when you render, click the render settings and and change the frame rate to 29.97, set to render fields with the appropriate dominance, and set the pulldown cadence (the first option is fine). ae will then render your 24p as 30i with a pulldown. note that you don’t necessarily have to convert 24p to 30i… if you were making a dvd, for instatance, you could create a progressive widescreen dvd that would play fine in a 4:3 interlaced tv.

This works with video footage but will it work with animation files as well? When I have tested this in the past it seems to studder or have interlacing problems. I have not tried playing with the pull down options yet. -Bob

i think this should work, no matter what…
if you have an hd comp or footage, be it 720p24 or 1080p24, and drop either into a widescreen sd, 24 fps comp, hit fit to comp and then render with the render settings changed to use 29.97, with fields and a pulldown. you should then get a widescreen sd 29.97 interlaced ntsc broadcast standard render.
if you have an hd comp or footage that is 720p60, you should be able to drop that into a widescreen sd, 29.97 comp and render that either with fields (smoother) or without fields (a little choppier), but both should look good. if you have problems with fields with that method , try a 59.94 widescreen sd comp and set the render settings to render 29.97 fps with fields.
if you have 720i or 1080i (29.97) footage, if everything is interpretted correctly, you should be able to drop that into a widscreen sd 29.97 comp, fit to comp and render 29.97 with fields or without. if you do see problems with field render, again try a widescreen comp with 59.94 fps and use the render settings to render it as 29.97 with fields.
