are there any other effects? it sort of looks like what broadcast safe can do to colors as the change to illegal values.
also, are you seeing this in preview or final render? and is opengl off? it could be a codec thing, or opengl issue.

i thought it was a little interesting that it doesn’t work in either the powerpc or the x86 versions. if opengl worked in ppc native ae7, why wouldn’t they leave it in for cs3 ppc?
it would seem that perhaps apple asked them disable it on the older macs version to eliminate arguments not to upgrade to a new mac…

are you taking your dvcprohd footage into ae just to change the frame rate? or are you adding other effects?
i’m not very familiar with fcp, but there is a frame rate conversion tool in fcp (or downloadable at panasonic.com) that should convert the frame rate to 24p. you might try it and see if there is a difference in quality, it could save you some time.
what was your method for upconverting the dvcam? just curious…

adobe mentions inclusion of those effects with cs3, but there is no mention if they are ub or not (which makes me think that they are ub, other wise adobe would would have a note somewhere). i couldn’t find any mention from cycore or the foundry about ub, except a note about the previously bundled versions of cc effects (non mach-0) had issues with intel macs, and they recommended upgrading to the hd versions.
adobe does have a note that opengl acceration is not currently available for mac, neither powerpc or intel macs…

you can test the footage you have by setting ae to interpret footage as either dominance, then create a comp that is double the frame rate of the footage. find a section that has some movement and step trhu it frame by frame.
if the movements appears to step forward, then backward as you advance thru the frames, then your dominance is reversed. change the interpretation to separate the other field first, and recheck the movement.

if you can’t find the ad online, maybe just describe how the particles interacted.
as roland mentioned, a displacement map and a water texture can give a watery movement to the text. factal noise can be used to generate the watery texture. combining that with colorama and caustics can give that drab fractal noise a liquid/oil-like appearance.

it does sound strange… but not much stranger than using a beta ae under emulation to get an effect that you had to pre-render out of a previous full version of ae 😉
as roland mentioned, it may be a field issue. are you rendering in fields? also, once you pre-render your ray effect, are you still running the powerpc version of the beta ae in rosetta or are you running the native x86 version? and, do you have the latest beta version?

when i capture with decklink, for some reason ae never interprets field order… not sure why… so you’ll need to set interpret footage manually to separate fields.
a few general rules for field interpretation and rendering…
if you don’t separate fields, don’t render with fields (if ae didn’t remove the fields then they are there, you don’t need to put them back… if you try to it will screw your fields up).
if you separate fields, then you can render with fields, or not… usually if it is going back into an nle to get edited with other interlaced footage, i try to get the fields back. if you want to render de-interlaced, you might also want to turn on preserve edges, the edges usually look a little smoother.
if you are only color adjusting footage, you won’t have to separate fields if you don’t want to, just follow the don’t separate fields workflow above.
if you want to do just about anything else (like keying) then you should separate fields, and use the separate fields workflow above.
by separtating your fields of your keyed footage, then adding motion graphics to your footage, you will be able to render them as either progressive or interlaced, and they will have the same appearance.

you can also convert your audio to keyframes (sound key is a better way to go because it allows you to isolate a frequency range, but audio to keyframes would be a good start).
then link your flicker effect to the audio keyframes. without being able to see the effect, its hard to theorize the method used… but you could link the audio to the opacity of an adjustment layer with a color adjustment (like levels, curves, etc) on it, or possible to the intesity property of the glow effect, or something like that.
to link a layer or effect property to the audio keyframes, add and expression to the property, then drag the expression pickwhip to the audio key frames. you can further adjust the expression by adding a multiplier or other mathmatical adjustment to the expression… say, x is the audio keyframe value, and the maximum value in your audio is 10. say you wanted to only have values above 8 effect your flicker, your expression could be x – 8. if a value of 2 isn’t high enough (say you linked it to opacity, 2% isn’t too opaque), so add a mulitplier, and you expression might look like this: (x – 8) * 100. now anything below 8 will return 0 and anything between 8 and x (10 max, in this example) will get multiplied by 100.

i believe the broadcast safe color effect will only treat illegal colors, not out of range luminance (blacks/whites). so, you may also need to apply levels to your adjustment layer and set the white output to 235 and the black output to 16, then apply broadcast colors after that if you need to make sure your colors are safe.
you can also usually make rgb-yuv color space adjustments when you import your footage into most editing software. at import there is often a setting to tell the software the source is rgb, and it will scale the colors and luminace to the proper color space.
i think aharon robinowitz has a broadcast safe color tutorial here… just click his face at the top of the ae forum and scroll down the page (or search broadcast safe articles).
