lens quality and resolution of the ccd will can effect sharpness, but your camera may work just fine if you can set things up right… motion tracking will work best in sharp contrasting areas of the footage. so tightening shutter angle or increasing the shutter speed will help reduce the motion blur that occurs as you pan/tilt the camera. also, making sure you have enough light to have a good depth of field will help keep more details in focus, and thus sharper details to track.

did you copy the file to your hard drive or are you pulling them in directly from the dvd?
i would put all media on the hard drive to use in ae.

well… you don’t need a great graphics card for ae, you just won’t use any of the opengl accelerated features, which really isn’t a big deal.
by default in cs3 opengl is only used in previews during interaction, not rendering or ram previews. and earlier version have it set completely off by default.
in cs3 there is an option to use opengl for interface drawing, i can’t remember the wording for the feature, but it was in the interface pref. earlier versions had no such option.
you could pickup a graphics card, plug it in and see if it helps, just make sure you can return it.
i had mentioned the connection because i have an older system at work that experiences a strange ghosting/smearing effect, particularly on the right side of dropdown menus… i finally figured out it is a bad connection on the monitor itself, but by wiggling the cable it will work fine for a while.

i was just trying to find the post from earlier this week where the poster was having problems with various effect not showing up in cs3.. i remembered that bcc was one of them, but someone did respond that upgrading to bcc 5.0 would fix it…

try runn cs3 under rosetta… select the ae application, choose file>get info.. and there is a check box for ‘open using rosetta’
i think that bcc is not a universal binary yet. an until then you can’t use cs3 as intel native and use powerpc effects, you must run cs3 as a powerpc app with rosetta.

i’ve occasionally had ae render strange things in some renders, sometimes things that weren’t even in that particular project, and this has usaully fixed it… rebooting has helped to.

things may be better now (i hope they are), but several years ago (about a year before adobe stated on their site that their software ran better on windows) i had ran into a guy who worked at adobe, who had basicaly said that development was first done in windows and once things were worked out there, mac development started….
i will say, this guy came across a bit anti-mac and he may have been trying to get into a pc-mac debate. he was just a friend of a friend i met once…

playing around with this a little more… if you want it to return a value based 0-360 degrees, this seems to work…

it would be helpful to know your platform and version of ae, and maybe what happened just prior to the crash (were you rendering, did you hit the 3d switch on a layer, enable cast shadows…).
but i would make sure opengl was disabled, should be found in the preview preferences, just uncheck the use opengl. if it is a fairly old version, you might check the comp settings and then the advanced tab, and see if there are some options there for opengl…

ok, atan2 fixes the quadrant issue… so this should work nicely.

where x and y are your calculated values between the 2 points.
