this link was posted a few weeks ago:

basically, it showed that like most multi-platform software, ae has been better optimized for windows than osx… that may change some as updates are released, but most companies will focus on the larger market.

    i think it is this:

    radiansToDegrees(Math.atan(y/x))

but there may be issues with which quadrant it is in… i seem to remember something about since tangent (or arctangent) can’t be calculated for an angle 90 degrees or greater then that created some issues getting angles that might be in any quadrant other than 1… steve’s link talked a bit about it too.

also, your monitor may be going bad… when little transistors start to go on a crt, you can get wiggly video, squeezed pictures or other monitor distortions.

if you can try a different monitor, that would be an easy way to test…

if you are convinced that your monitor, connections and cable are good, you could look at a trying a different graphics card. you don’t need to spend much money, just find out what type of expansion card you need (agp, pci, etc.) you should be able to find a decent used one on ebay for cheap.

it sounds like a loose connection or bad monitor cable…. check the connections to your monitor and wiggle the monitor cable around.

August 31, 2007 at 1:15 pm in reply to: What memory setting with 9 gigs of RAM on 8 core??

as far as the ram setting, i think i would leave it at the default 3gb. i haven’t heard of any benefit to modifying this when you have so enough ram.

you can look at the ram cache settings if when you enable multiprocessing it doesn’t say …7 additional processors will be used… by lowering the ram cache setting to allow more cores to be used in rendering. with 8 cores and 9gb you’ll be looking at around 1gb for the ram cache to use all the cores.

August 30, 2007 at 7:20 pm in reply to: Dithering in imported videos?

i assume that this is what it looks like in ae preview window and not after rendering fro ae…

it looks like a interlace issue… either the footage is interlaced and ae is not deinterlacing or the footage is progressive and ae in trying to deinterlace… from the looks i think it is the later.

select the footage in the project window, then choose file>interpret footage>main… now check the separate fields pulldown… if it is set to upper or lower, set it to off. if it is set to off, try setting to upper or lower.

August 30, 2007 at 6:51 pm in reply to: 3D circle of a photo

i had made something similar too using cc cylinder… it was to created a ‘virtual set’ piece with several video screen cylinders that were stacked on top of each other, offset and rotating differently… each video screen cylinder was made of curved screens wrapped around a cylinder.

i just made a comp that was wide enough for around 6-8 video screens, then took that to another comp and used cc cylinder.

but the images were curved by the effect, i take it that the poster wanted flat images…

2gb is the most a 32-bit os can address for any application (well.. i think you can find a boot init file to allow 3gb…).

but that 2gb restriction is for a single application. when you enable multiprocessing in ae3 (or using nucleo pro) it starts a render engine application for each processor (in your case up to 3 additional render applications), allowing you to use up to 8gb (2gb x 4 cores) of ram for ae rendering.

August 30, 2007 at 5:20 pm in reply to: sequencing layers

once you get your layers evenly spread over the duration needed, you could precomp those then time remap the precomp, select the two keyframes and then use the keyframe assistant and choose exponential scale. that should accelerate the rate nicely.

but as far as spacing those layers out easily, i think you’d need a script that would look a the selected layers and offset the start points of those layers based on their index number….

i guess you could precomp each layer then drag all those precomps to the new comp icon, choose sequence layers to space them out… but i’m not sure how much easier it would be to have to precomp each layer…

cc cylinder won’t do what you need, it will stretch one layer into a cylinder…

i’m sure i’ve seen expressions or scripts that will position layers in a circle, and as dave mentioned parenting them to a null and rotating the null shoul work well… you should also be able to enable auto-orient for those layers and they will always face the camera, if needed.

trapcode’s echo space would work well if the images are all the same.
