the easiest way would be to move the mask to a new layer… either by copy and paste, or duplicate the layer and delete the mask from one of them. then, place the ‘masked’ layer above the other layer and set it to use the above layer as a trackmatte (alpha matte). the trackmatte setting is in the ‘modes’ panel in the timeline.
now the mask and layer are separate and can be manipulated individually. if you need to ‘join’ them back again later, you can either parent one to the other or precomp the two layers into one layer.

i’m pretty new to the color management settings in ae, but not using the color management may be part of the problem…
enable ae’s color management in the project settings, try setting it to what you will be outputting (sounded like hdtv 16-235). now check the interpret footage settings for the footage, and see if the footage has a color profile. if it doesn’t, try setting it to what you think it would be (probably the same hdtv 16-235 as before). check the output module, and make sure the settings for color managment match the output, since your going back to hd, use the same hdtv 16-235 profile.
render and import, then check the color profile… it should match the original. then compare the footage.
if it doesn’t help, and the original footage didn’t have a color profile, try selecting a different profile for this footage. it may be that converting the dvcprohd footage has expanded the levels, but ae assumed the wrong levels…

you didn’t give any comps specs, but i agree with brian… setting up for sd 16:9 24p should give you good results when playing out sd dvd on an hd screen.
as far as the workflow, from what i’ve read in the dvdsp forum… render to lossless animation (progressive), take it to compressor for mpeg2 (make sure setting are for progressive), take that to dvdsp to burn, again making sure that the settings are for 16:9 progressive dvd.

September 12, 2007 at 1:57 pm in reply to: Illustrator CS3 layered file will not import to AFX7 as a compactualy the release to layers function will put all the vectors (or vector groups) on new layers, but the layers will be within a ‘parent’ layer… but it’s done this for a while, at least since cs2, so i would think saving it as a cs2 ai file wouldn’t remedy this.
but, if you didn’t pull the separated layers out of the parent (if you used the release to layers method), i would give that a try, and delete the empty ‘parent’ layer. you might also try saving without pdf compatibility.
i haven’t done this since upgrading to cs3, so there may be a new step or workaround…

try animating simple choker on a keyed inkblot to get the spreading effect…
if that is successful, then using it as a trackmatte for footage or other textures, or the reverse, using the footage or textures as trackmattes for the inkblot will probably go a long way to creating the effect used in the video… throwing the mirror effect on an adjustment layer at the top of the comp should work for the ‘fold’.
you should be able to see the video here, for anyone who would like to see it… it is a pretty cool effect.

did you try ‘hide’ from the application menu or the keyboard shortcut (control-command-h)?
this seems unusual… i’m not having any problems here (cs3, 4-core macpro). are any other applications open? do you have the latest update? mine says 8.0.1.8… have you tried a reboot?

not that i know of…. although i’m sure a script could be written, but that would take much longer than deleting 10 effects.
but if you want to apply the same effect (with the same settings) to ten layers, you can apply the effect to an adjustment layer (layer>new>adjustment layer). any effects applied to the adjustment layer will be applied to all layers below that adjustment layer. then if you needed to delete an effect on the adjustment layer, there would only be one effect to delete.

you will also need to make sure klf your is a universal binary, if it is not, you will only be able to use the effects if you run ae cs3 under rosetta (as a ppc app), which can be set from the get info window of the ae application.
i do believe that the latest version of klf is both ae cs3 friendly and intel-mac friendly, but you should check there site for compatibility.

September 10, 2007 at 8:09 pm in reply to: Mattes leaving a fine black line around the edgeif you have the 3d object footage rendered with an alpha channel, then setting the interpret footage settings to premultiplied should work, as mentioned before…
but, if you have the 3d footage and a matte as separate renders, and are setting the matte as the trackmatte for the 3d fill footage, precomp the matte and fill footage (after setting the fill footage to use the matte as a trackmatte). then apply the effect remove color matting, this should remove the fringe… if the fringe was not black, choose the color that the 3d object was rendered on.
in the future, if you can render as straight or unmatted in your 3d app and also include the alpha in the file, you can simplify this workflow… be aware though that not all 3d apps correctly render as straight with alpha… my somewhat old version of c4d gives me a white fringe around the object, and i actually think it is easier to remove the black fringe in the interpret footage settings.
