Yeah, I’m a long-time AJA guy, but in this case it does seem like the BMD product is a little more “elegant.”
It’s surprising really, because I imagine that there must be thousands of guys in my position: in need of ingesting tape-based file footage on a regular basis…Thanks for all the advice/tips — much appreciated…

I own a HPX-3100 and have been happy with it — former camera was HPX-2000 and the 3100 is a nice upgrade (and quite a bit lighter)…
Wait for NAB though, just to see what’s new & improved…

Well, it’s quite a ways South of Redding, but Coleman Valley road, outside of Occidental in Sonoma County is quite lovely. On a non-foggy day (check first), you’re treated to massive panorama views of the Pacific. Coleman Valley Rd. is like a trip back to old-California — it meets the Pacific close to Bodega Bay.
Many years ago, I shot a product rollout for Indian Motorcycles. We had two pro riders and a CHP escort. We shot at Coleman Valley Road.

If there isn’t much of a price difference btw the 3100 and the 600 — go with the 3100 — the extra five grand or so you’ll spend factors out to roughly only a thousand a year — for the 5 years it’ll be in service.
I own a 3100 and have been very happy with it — a major upgrade from the 2000 I owned previously.
The 600 is supposedly lighter — that’s never a bad thing. The 2000/3000 series were boat-anchors — surprising for “tapeless” cameras — the 3100 is a manageable weight — (just barely).

Well, personally I have HMI’s, tungsten, and fluorescents, and since you mentioned the the “time” factor, I’d steer you toward the fluorescents. Using them, I know that no matter what is at the end of the elevator, be it daylight-balanced or tungsten, with the Divas I can respond quickly. They also break down fast as you don’t have the cooling-of-bulbs issues. Dimmable, too. If you get two, make sure to go big/small, or very-big/big.
The fixtures themselves produce nice, flat, flattering type light, but lack “punch.”
I’m sure some would steer you toward LEDs — they’re probably fine as well.
The tools help — but it’s mastering the craft that’s most important.
