Maybe I’m missing something here, but it looks like “No Motion Path” is chosen. That would show…no motion paths.

Use hold keyframes. Doesn’t that work with color?

The screenshots did not show up. Did you possibly accidentally make your AVI a guide layer? (Little blue grid icon next to the layer name).

Wiggle paths is an animator (one of many) that is found on the shape layer in the timeline. (See image.) How they work may not make sense immediately. You might want to google up a tutorial.

If you are working on a shape layer, you can add a “wiggle paths” to the circle. That will let you “roughen” up the circle and also let you animate it.

For traditional cell-style animation there are lots of dedicated programs that will be more suited than After Effects. But many animators use a combination of programs. They might do their character animation in one, but then composite the characters, backgrounds and effects using After Effects.

Of course, it depends on the effect, but…
For effects that create an overlay (like lightning) it is typically “better” to have the effect on its own layer (in my opinion) rather than “compositing on original” because it gives more control over the effect (blending modes, opacity, scale, position, etc.) and because if you change the affected layer for any reason, you don’t have to re-do the effect. Just a general flexibility thing.
I’m sure others have other reasons.

Search effects for “Audio Waveform.” It creates a visual waveform based on a layer’s audio track. It doesn’t look exactly like an optical sound track, but if you tweak the parameters right it might give you what you need.

You can also use the turbulent displace/glow in conjunction with the beam effect. Makes it easy to animate the end points of the “lightning.”
