Tried the demo yesterday with the pro codec (can’t get the ON2 codec just yet) and the results were beautiful and fast, much faster than Cleaner. Looks to me like Cleaner is a dead product.

    Thanks

    QT 7.0.4

Audio keeps defaulting to AMR Narowband. I have tried to force it to stay with MP3. The last few times it keeps going back to AMR, this last time (it is still encoding) it stayed on MP3. maybe that will work, but it is so slow. I am testing Sorenson Squeeze and it seems to be a lot faster.

    Thanks

May 3, 2006 at 12:09 pm in reply to: External backup drives – any recommendations?

[PDPost] “I also looked at the G-Tech drives, but they do more than I need them to and are price for what they do (more) as well!”

Don’t dismiss the G-Raid drives just because of their price. I have 5 of them and they are rock solid. They run just aobut 24/7 and we have yet to have any issues with them. If you are looking for just a backup drive that you will connect, transfer files and then shut down then I would suggest going to Newegg.com and buying a drive and enclosure, but if this drive will be powered up and connected to your machine then I would recommend something like the G-Raid (a drive with fans) that can hold up under the strain. I know that a lot of people like LaCie drives and many of them have never had any problems with them but I have. And based on the hardware and customer service that I received from LaCie I will NEVER buy another one.

[PDPost] “which has FW800 as well (that would be how I would hook it into the Quad – my AJA Io LA is using one of the FW400 inputs).”

Bear in mind, if you hook up this drive to the system firewire bus that came with you Mac and have your AJA plugged in you will only get firewire 400 speed out of the drive. The firewire bus slows to the speed of its slowest component. To get FW800 speeds you have two options, 1) disconnect your AJA when using your external drive, or 2) add a PCI FW800 card to your Mac.

For what its worth and good luck.

Thanks Kevin, I called them yesterday, very nice folks, if the client will pay, I will probably rent from them. They are the only place that has a MBP available for that week.

[Sean Lander] “Well I just finished a series for the Discovery Channel that was graded and on-lined on a 20″ sitting right next to the cinema displays.
No problems what so ever, and the larger image is a benefit. You’ll find a 14 or 15 is significantly cheaper, but if you can afford it go for
a 17″ at least, remembering that if your like us here in Oz almost everything nowadays is edited in 16:9 so you are effectively reducing the
image size on the CRT by a fair percentage.”

Thanks Sean, I had thought about a 14″, but having used one of those in a broadcast situation with it right in front of me I felt that it was just too small and one of the coporate edit suites that I frequent has one of these 20″ bad boys in both of their suites and they are easy to see from the desk or accross the room. I see this as a benefit.

As for 16:9, I am afraid that the majority of our work will be 4:3 for the distant future. In education we tend to lag behind the rest of the world for a bit. Sad but true.

    Thanks again

Thanks for all of your input. It confirmed what I was thinking, but not what I was hoping for.

I guess a couple of Sony 20″ CRT’s will be the way to go. Anybody want to contribute?

    Thanks Again

    Jamibo,

Also be sure that you have Phantom Power turned off if you have the outputs from the IO LA going into your Mackie. The IoLA cannot handle phantom powered mic pres and will eventually burn up. You shouldn’t need Phantom power anyway unless you have a condenser mic that you are using.

BTW, Ed has given you some great advice, keep listening to him, he obviously knows what he is talking about.

    Jamibo,

Plugging line level outputs into the mic input of a mixer is going to give you bad results unless you have some way of padding that hot line level signal. Give us alittle more info and we might be able to help more. What kind of mixer is it? Are you sure that the output on the amp is line level? Is the mixer self-powered (does it have an amp built in)? If it is then you will need to use an Aux out, or something that is not amplified. Give us all the info you can and we will try to help.

April 21, 2006 at 5:57 pm in reply to: s-video audio problems

OK, may have solved my own problem. Went back today and rewired the whole edit suite. Things had gotten kinda sloppy swapping out some equipment and installing some new stuff in a hurry. Now my problem is gone. Best I can figure is that I had an AC line a little too close to either the S-Video or one of the audio lines. After cleaning things up a bit and making sure that all audio, video and AC cables are separated the problem has dissappeared. OK, I have slapped myself on the wrist for letting things get out of control and will never let AC and AV cables play together again.
