Thanks David, I think that I will buy a 5 disc enclosure from Sonnet that uses port multiplication and use this to swap drives in and out. I can use it to make an archive copy, take that drive out and put 2-5 discs in and use the same enclosure for a scratch drive. It’s all SATA so I get a lot of bang for the buck.

OK, I’m convinced that this REV thing is not so great an idea. Thanks Ned and Shane for your thoughts. Now to decide between just another firewire drive or eSATA. Hmmmm.

I see your point. I guess that I just have this aversion to placing a HDD on a shelf for an indefinite period of time. I should just get over that.

That makes me think though. What about an expresscard esata interface and one of these external hot swap boxes. Seems that I could get a lot of bang for the buck with something that would not only provide a fast backup option with one drive, but also another external scratch drive when used with 2 drives in a RAID config.

Does that make sense? My brain and my fingers aren’t talking today.

[Jemima Harrison] “I can’t see any way we’d be allowed to take hard drives in the cabin on any internal or transatlantic flight.”

Jemima – I just returned from Central Asia shooting a short form doc (also of a snsitive nature) and had no problem carrying my backup HDD on the plane with me. We used several G-Drives and backed up on DVD’s as well and shipped them separately. The only time I was asked about the HDD was in London and when I told them what it was they had no problem with it being in my carry-on.

    Something to think about.

    Jeffery,

Just got finished shooting a short form doc in 720/24pN in Central Asia. Same worries as you. Only 8 days to shoot and no retakes. Scary! Here’s what we did, just understand that we only have about 6 hours of footage to your 60+ hours.

    Shot on 2 HVX 200’s with 2 8 gig and 2 4 gig cards and 1 p2Store.
Transfered p2’s to Store and from Store to MBP with a 250gig G-Drive.
Imported to FCP with another 250gig G-Drive
    Burned 35 DVD backups
Shipped media home separately for safety reasons.

Some things to remember, while the p2 card will transfer to the Store rather quickly the trip from the store to the HDD is slow as molasses in January. One 8gig card file from store to HDD took 1 hour. If this is unusual I hope that someone will tell me what I did wrong.

We were able to get 31 minutes on 12 gigs so with 2 8 gigs you can get 41 minutes. Not too shabby.

For the next project we will take a laptop with a PCMCIA interface for faster transfers.

    Good Luck

I found a few there, but they are very unorganized and the download site that was set up there is now gone. I was hoping there were more out there somewhere. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the info. I look forward to hearing reports as folks get this installed on their MBP’s.

Any ideas on a timeline for a universal version?
