Almost every time I try to record more than a few minutes by passing an analog signal through a DV deck I get errors. I have a bunch of 184 minute DVCAM tapes and I just transfer the VHS footage to the DVCAM tape. I then log and capture from the DVCAM tape. Of course this takes twice as long, but I don’t have to sit and watch it. I just set a timer on my phone for the length of the VHS program and then go back and put in another VHS tape.

Are you simply “importing” or using “log and transfer”?

This isn’t really practical any more, but many years ago when I was linear editing an associate once advised to “Never have more than one color monitor in the edit suite”. I always hated to hear the client ask “So which one of these monitors should I believe?”

I have not tried a Kona card myself, but others on this board have had the exact same problem whether using a Kona or Blackmagic card. The problem is not with Blackmagic or Kona – I am 100% positive the problem lies with FCP. See these posts for people with Kona issues:

Who said I was using FW control? I am using RS-422 control and HD-SDI. I am using a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme HD capture card. I have not been able to get FCP to capture HDV from the HVR-1500 with either firewire or RS-422. However – both Premiere Pro CS3 and Blackmagic Deck Control WILL capture HDV every time – perfectly, 100%, no errors. The FCP I/O driver for the HVR-1500 is written poorly.

What format are you capturing from and what deck are you using? I have lots of problems with my Sony HVR-1500 and FCP. With HDV footage I have to use a ten second pre-roll or else FCP arbitrarily captures whatever it wants. If I capture any SD (Mini-DV, DVCam) footage it works perfectly every time. I have captured DVCPro HD from a Panasonic deck and it works perfectly. My HVR-1500 works perfectly in SD or HD with Premiere!
I have isolated the problem to be with FCP. I was told by an Apple FCP employee that Apple isn’t really concerned with tape-based workflows any more. They don’t want to change any of the deck control software for fear of breaking something that is currently working correctly.

I do not know if this is true, but I had heard it needed to be 6.0.6 for AVCHD to ProRes.
Why don’t you go ahead and run software update to upgrade to the most recent version of FCP 6? It doesn’t cost anything to upgrade to 6.0.6. -
Put the tape in your deck/camera and roll a few seconds of the tape. Now try batch capture and that warning message should have gone away.
