You’re right on. The biggest problem “IS” it runs on Windows. But most of the world sucked up to the Bill Gates pitch and here we all are. I remember my Amiga… never a computer problem. Oh well.

I do try and keep it offline except for transferring data across my local network. I’ll run some test making sure it is disconnected.

Yeah, that’s the key. I need someone who knows Vegas and computers to sit here and figure this out. I do really like Vegas when it is working. If you’ve got a stable system, just wish I could mirror it.

Well, I guess I woke up a few people.

I’ve spent my sleepless night going over my Vegas situation and reading your feedback. Don’t get me wrong. I do like Vegas when it’s working. If many say they don’t get crashes and others say do all the time, and it’s the same software version, it really leaves only 2 possible causes: the computer system or a bad Vegas disk/or download file.

I first got Vegas Pro 8 (32bit-WIN XP) last year to start to learn it (very limited time), between all my normal editing on my “other” NLE. I didn’t have any crashes in my learning. I then got Pro 9 and went through 9.0a, 9.0b and 9.0c and upgraded to WIN 7 64-bit. I edited a 2-cam wedding ceremony using multicam with no crashes. Then I upgraded to 9.0e. At the same time I did some computer hardware changes. Removed 2 external SCSI RAID boxes, replaced with one new SATA RAID box and installed 2 new RocketRAID cards to handle internal and external RAIDs. Then I put Vegas Pro 9.0e into full production…. and the crashes started.

Not being a computer guru, I’m thinking it may be something to do with the new RAID controllers and my internal RAID; since that’s where all my video data is located. I am in the process of cleaning off and reformating the internal RAID drive. So maybe the idea of wiping it clean and starting over is the key. Since that’s what I’ll be doing anyway.

Now when you say “start over” do you mean recapturing everything again?

I’m glad some of you have stable systems. Just wish I could mirror your system and have the same stability so I can get back to the creative process of editing killer videos using Vegas. (I really don’t want to or have the time to start over learning yet another NLE).

    Feedback always welcome.

    Thanks all,

I too am a long time Video Toaster user. But it could not handle HD and is now lacking in support and development. So I decided to try Vegas Pro. After gearing up and learning the basics, putting a lot of time and money into it, I find when I put it in full production it falls flat on it’s face. Clips crash it. Adjusting clips crash it. It will swap clips with other clips upon reloading the projects.

So, like Joel, I’m now looking at CS5. What I want is a stable NLE that can handle real world editing. I do a lot of weddings and events and videos of corporate clients and websites. So Premiere Pro CS5 users, enlighten us with you experience. How many times a day does CS5 crash?

It now appears that I have wasted the past 9 months gearing up for Vegas and learning what I can only to find that once I put it in full production it can’t handle basic editing tasks. To add to the clips crashing Vegas, now when I start to make a few adjustments (like simply putting a clip in slo-mo) it crashes. Saying I’m disappointed in the Vegas software is putting it lightly. It seems Vegas could be a really cool NLE but just not in the real world of professional editors.

This all concerns me very much. I’m new to Vegas coming from 20 years using Video Toaster and seeing their SpeedEDIT slowly dying. I’m now trying to start all new projects in Vegas Pro 9.0e but having problems with my current project (read my posts “Why Does Vegas Captured Clips Crash..”). If Vegas is going to end up following VT into the ground, I’d like to know before I invest much more time and energy into learning Vegas. Most of that will depend if my problems can be solved. If 25% of my clips are going to be crashing Vegas, I gotta find a better NLE.

I do have Premiere CS4. Never used. Never even opened it up. But I have it and I can get CS5 if this is actually a better NLE. But before I do something like that, I want to give Vegas a chance.

July 23, 2010 at 2:10 am in reply to: Why Does Vegas Captured Clips Crash Vegas??

I’m still finding too many clips that Vegas captured that is crashing Vegas. Is there or is there not a bug in 9.0e capture? Why did the simple project I did before this one have no problems and now this one does?

When I capture from HDV tape to Vegas and Vegas is making a new clip (file) for each shot and I end up with about 100 shots from the 60min tape, why would many of the clips (randomly) be corrupt? Why are some OK and others not? Do I have to scrap everything and re-capture all my footage again (a 5 hour process) and hope I don’t get any corrupt clips (files)?

Like I said, most my projects with be at this level of creativity using lots of effects and layers of video and audio. I need an NLE that can handle my edits. And after reviewing Vegas and other NLE’s I switched to Vegas from my old NLE.

So, I can’t believe I’m the only person this is happening to.

Dan- I will do that in the morning and report back. I’m new at Vegas coming from the VideoToaster world after 20 years. Don’t like hearing “I’ve never seen this before” coming from a Vegas vet like yourself. I don’t want to be the first with new problems Vegas has never seen before. Hope I can figure this out and get moving on this project as I have about 20 more waiting in line for edit.

    Thanks,

July 21, 2010 at 9:57 pm in reply to: Why Does Vegas Captured Clips Crash Vegas??

Also I just discover something else. The first clip that was crashing Vegas that I re-captured and is now working isn’t getting saved with the project. When I reload the project where this clip was is now replaced with a completely different clip…. from a different bin/folder even. When I check its properties, it is the name of the clip that SHOULD be there, but its actually a different clip with a different name.

Why is Vegas exchanging clips in the time line when I reload the project? I’m beginning to think Vegas Pro 9.0e has some kind of bug in capturing because it just doesn’t like some of my footage.

    Please advise soon, thank.
