Thank You Jan. I’m so confused :)!
Just kidding. There are things that I have always liked about the HVX. I am a DVX100A owner and figured that the HVX was the HD version of what I already have.
I tell you, From what I have discovered. Both camera would allow me to capture uncompressed HD-SDI in a studio setting where I would be doing screen work. Other than that, I’ve always wanted bigger sensors (thinking that it would be more resolution natively).
Jan you bring up some very interesting points to consider. Do you think there may be another version of the HVX coming out. Kind of like the way you guys handled the DVX100/A/B?
Thanks again. I hope I make the right choice for my work. I believe in tapeless HD future.

Thank you Randy and Craig. Very good feedback!
I too have patiently waited for the dust to settle with regard to HD handheld and tapeless acquisition. I wondered if Sony would respond properly to what Panasonic has done with the DVX/HVX camcorders. I have the DVX100A and have been more than pleased with shooting in 24p.
Key points that you’ve made that grab me are:
The larger image sensor of the EX1. There are probably some differences about CCD vs CMOS that have to be understood. Here’s a discussion of that very thing (Link).
4:2:2 off of the head. This to me would be very helpful in a studio environment where I have control over everything. (I’m assuming that I would be able to feed a MacBook Pro and go for it.)
I look forward to seeing someone play around with speed effects from the camera. This is one of the things l liked about the HVX which makes it a mini-Varicam (if you will).
I’m confused a bit about why the EX1 is labeled CineAlta though. I always attributed that label to HDCAM SR stuff. The EX1 is a totally different animal.
Another concern for me was the EX1 and MPEG Long GOP approach. Again, in a studio environment I can get away from that but we will see what comes from the field from those shooting if the quality is of the level that we all demand. Mpeg or not. For me, I guess that I would get it into ProRes or 10-bit Uncompressed in the end for editing and finishing.

Thanks Shane.
They’ve put the Cine Alta logo on the camera. So, I thought maybe it lives up to the standard they’ve established with the brand. No, huh?
The color space thing is a concern for me as I anticipate doing screen work and a lot of compositing. I wonder if there are any modifications coming to the HVX. Like Panasonic did with the DVX100/A/B versions?

I’m trying to remember what happened. I think I got an answer from another Forum. If I find the response I’ll let you know.

I don’t know how but it’s working now. Maybe I had something selected that made it unavailable.

My apologies for not responding sooner. I forgot to reset my pref’s to be notified of responses to threads.
Your question–No, I don’t have any experience with C4D, but of all of the 3D apps it seems to be the most user friendly setup, and appears to be getting more robust with every release, in addition to, being critically acclaimed player in the market. I figure I can add modules as I need them as opposed to buying 3dsMax for nearly 4K. Also, there’s a lot of training a support for the C4D. That’s the real encouraing part for me.
Right now, I just need it for logo and atmospheric/texture type work in Final Cut Studio and Combustion.

I’m beginning to get a feel for how I want to approach things now that Motion is the mix. It’s much more responsive than Combustion. I forsee editing in FCP, then moving into Motion and getting whatever I can out of it (which is a lot) quickly, do Titling in Live Type or Motion, then back into FCP via the roundtripping workflow. From FCP being able to export to Combustion via Automatic Duck’s Pro Import.
I don’t have the Duck so I don’t know if this will work.
I’m looking into which 3D app I can add to my workstation as that is the only missing component from my setup and was lookin at C4D as a way when I discovered a workflow enhancement they have built into their 3d app for Motion. See it at:

Oh yeah, here’s that link to the C4D to Motion movie:

FX Bear,
Yeah, I too am waiting for the C4 update. I recently upgraded into Final Cut Studio which included Motion 2. I can tell you that everything I have been wanting as far as responsivenes and interactivity from Combustion is in Motion and it’s performing the real-time playback and updating with my G5 using a 9600 Pro card. I can imagine what it will do with x800 installed which is the plan. I agree with Dan. Between Motion and Combustion you do have the bases covered.
Once the bugs are worked out of the Final Cut Studio roundtripping workflow this is going to be some workstation. I forsee doing the bulk of my motion graphics, titling and editing in Final Cut 5, Motion 2 and Live Type then using Automatic Duck to bring the FCP timeline into Combustion for finishing only when necessary. I also saw a very impressive QT movie at the Cinema4D site that showed C4D having a Motion Export to bring a scene right into Motion. Very impressive.
