    Hi There,
I am not 100% sure of the issue you are seeing, it sounds like you might still have control of the camera via the Firewire port but please describe more of what is going on…
Do you have any extra traffic on the firewire bus. AJA IO (IO HD), external hard-drives, MBox or other audio interface. These are all things that can choke up the bus and might have changed since the last time you used the camera successfully.

“Apple sees the camera but I can’t edit. iMovie used to see the camera and now it doesn’t.”

By can’t edit you mean can’t capture? Are you able to ingest the footage by capturing it in?

JG is right on about all of this. Setup takes a minute to lock down but if you are set up to layoff HDCAM then this should be cake. Let us know how it all works out, and if you have more questions. Just make sure you are all humming on the same sync and you will be rockin.

That Kona is the best! I have several and we rely on them everyday of the week for conversions every which way.

    Thanks Jeremy!

    Hey Ian,
Which deck are you using for the DVCProHD, the 3700 (B)? I would think that the absolute best conversion you will get out of your gear would be play the timeline (using Edit to Tape) straight out of final cut and use the Kona 3 to do the conversion. As long as you have a nice tri-level sync box and the deck you need to deliver on that Kona Card will do a much better conversion straight off the native timeline than any compressor settings (or any digital file) that i have come accross. Anytime you are delivering on tape I would lean on that card, I couldn’t work with out mine!

I think with your tools there is no reason to have to go outside your facility to get great results, just my opinion. What are your proj settings and what is the final deliver spec?

    Hey Jeremy,
This is a easy task to slip out of sync with. To more accurately help you we would need your FCP project settings. Are you running true 24 sequence in Final Cut? Make sure that your protools session is also at 24 fps at the time you import the OMF. It is critical that you change the frame rate before you import otherwise you’re in for trouble. Like wise if at 23.98 in Final Cut then verify 23.976 in ProTools BEFORE the import.

It is possible to fix this once you have done the mix but I would not recomend it unless it will take substantially less time than the mix did. It is not very fun and you need someone who is fast with PT and knows their stuff with sync.

Include more about your setting specifically and I will try to help!

How are you locking to picture in Protools? Just importing a quicktime in the timeline or something remote like VVTR or Satellite? I assume you are on a PT HD System.

Tip. I Always put a visual and audible 2 pop at the head and tail of my timeline when using this workflow… write down the exact frames of those 2 pops and check them in every step of your project. (importing the OMF/Bouncing back your mix or stems and pulling into FCP)

It takes a lot of headache from the end of the process and spreads it evenly across your whole post experience… kidding, kidding…

I hope some of this might help in the future but I know if you have already mixed you are bummin’, let us know you settings and I will try to help you fix it!

  • So quick steps that help me move faster.

1 – Double click a clip (master clip or timeline) to open it in the viewer.
2 – Goto the motion tab and set rotation to 180.
    3 – Goto Menu – Effects:Make Favorite Motion (or ctrl^f)
    4 – Goto Effects Window:Favorites Bin
5 – The Favorite you just created is in there titled “myclipname (Motion)”
6 – Rename to something like “Red Rock – 180 rotate”
7 – Goto Menu – Effects:Favorite Motion Effects to see what the quick-key is. Most recent favorite defaults to (ctrl^+shift↑+5)
8 – double click the clip that needs the rotation and push the quick-key for the new motion fav.

With your bin opened in list form stretching from top to bottom of the screen you can power through 200 clips in less than 5 minutes. I know this isn’t the best but it is really pretty fast and it will be the correct orientation for color. If any of the Gurus know how to apply a filter or favorite to multiple master clips at once please step in here and share. I hope this helps at least decrease your time on this step.
