  • Compressor settings for 720p to 1080i

    Hey everybody!

What would the best settings be for Compressor if I’m trying to convert a show edited at 720p23.98 to 1080i60? Right now I’m laying off to HDCAM 1080p through our Kona3, taking the tape to another facility and using an SR deck to convert to a 1080i HDCAM, then tape to tape to a DVCPROHD tape for delivery.

This workflow sucks, but it’s the only way I can get clean results. I’ve tried several settings in compressor (so I can skip having to take the tape out of house to get converted) but can’t get a result that I’m happy with.

Any help would be awesome! Thanks in advance!

    Hey Ian,
Which deck are you using for the DVCProHD, the 3700 (B)? I would think that the absolute best conversion you will get out of your gear would be play the timeline (using Edit to Tape) straight out of final cut and use the Kona 3 to do the conversion. As long as you have a nice tri-level sync box and the deck you need to deliver on that Kona Card will do a much better conversion straight off the native timeline than any compressor settings (or any digital file) that i have come accross. Anytime you are delivering on tape I would lean on that card, I couldn’t work with out mine!

I think with your tools there is no reason to have to go outside your facility to get great results, just my opinion. What are your proj settings and what is the final deliver spec?

    Key Keefe,

Thanks for the reply! I was under the impression the Kona card couldn’t do 23.98 to 29.97 conversions… I’m using a HD1700 for the deck.

BTW, my project is setup to cut 720p at 23.98, and my final delivery spec needs to be 1080i60 at 29.97.

You can do this with a Kona3 Card in a couple of clicks. Set your FCP in the proper HD easy setup (720p23.98 VFR and whatever your codec is). Then go to the Kona Control Panel and right click on the output that is hooked up to your deck (let’s say it’s SDI 2). So, right click on the SDI 2 output triangle and choose “secondary” from the drop down menu, then right click it again and choose 1080i29.97. You should then see a cross convert icon on the SDI 2 output line and you should be getting 1080i29.97 video to your deck.

No reason to go to HDCam to SR to HDCam to DVCPro HD. Wow!

JG is right on about all of this. Setup takes a minute to lock down but if you are set up to layoff HDCAM then this should be cake. Let us know how it all works out, and if you have more questions. Just make sure you are all humming on the same sync and you will be rockin.

That Kona is the best! I have several and we rely on them everyday of the week for conversions every which way.

    Thanks Jeremy!
