  • Flip Footage 180* / Apply Motion Attributes to Multiple Clips

Posted by Dustin Parsons on November 6, 2008 at 6:01 pm

I have a lot of footage shot on the Panasonic HVX with the Redrock adapter that I need flipped 180* and I’d prefer not to use an Effect like Flop.

Is there a way to apply a 180* Rotation to the Motion attributes of all my clips at the same time before I drop them in the Timeline?

If not, does anyone have a method they’ve used before that doesn’t require rendering and will keep the footage upright when I send it to Color?

    Thanks for your help

    Turn your monitor upside down.

Yeah, that seems to do the trick for the video but my mouse movements are backwards and all the text is upside-down. Maybe there’s another method?

[Jeremy Garchow] “Turn your monitor upside down.”

    Exactly what I was thinking!

Your video monitor dude, not your computer monitor.

What the heck is wrong with the flop filter?

    Have a wonderful day.

    Lots of rendering

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if I use the Flop effect the clips will still be upside-down after sending the footage from FCP to Color?

Whereas if I was to rotate them 180* using the motion attributes they will not (this I know for sure).

Since nobody has answered my question

“Is there a way to apply a 180* Rotation to the Motion attributes of all my clips at the same time before I drop them in the Timeline?”

I’m assuming it can’t be done.

No, you can only copy/paste attributes in the timeline.

So quick steps that help me move faster.

1 – Double click a clip (master clip or timeline) to open it in the viewer.
2 – Goto the motion tab and set rotation to 180.
    3 – Goto Menu – Effects:Make Favorite Motion (or ctrl^f)
    4 – Goto Effects Window:Favorites Bin
5 – The Favorite you just created is in there titled “myclipname (Motion)”
6 – Rename to something like “Red Rock – 180 rotate”
7 – Goto Menu – Effects:Favorite Motion Effects to see what the quick-key is. Most recent favorite defaults to (ctrl^+shift↑+5)
8 – double click the clip that needs the rotation and push the quick-key for the new motion fav.

With your bin opened in list form stretching from top to bottom of the screen you can power through 200 clips in less than 5 minutes. I know this isn’t the best but it is really pretty fast and it will be the correct orientation for color. If any of the Gurus know how to apply a filter or favorite to multiple master clips at once please step in here and share. I hope this helps at least decrease your time on this step.
