  • FCP>OMF>ProTools>Bounce>FCP out of sync

    My workflow was as follows:

    FCP>OMF>ProTools>Bounce>FCP

    the original timeline was in 24fps, the ProTools session is also in 24. The bounce comes back into FCP and is out of sync, the audio is getting progressively earlier and earlier.

    Any ideas?

    I don’t know about BOUNCE. What does it do to the audio? Why do you go from ProTools to Bounce to FCP? I have always just gotten AIFFs from the audio guy…individual tracks that I drop back into my timeline.

    Check if Pro Tools is set for drop or non-drop. If it doesn’t match your timeline that might acount for the difference.

    Bouncing is the process by which you get an AIFF out of ProTools.

    Check to see if your timline is 23.98 and ProTools is set to 24.0. Might account for it as well.

    Hey Jeremy,
    This is a easy task to slip out of sync with. To more accurately help you we would need your FCP project settings. Are you running true 24 sequence in Final Cut? Make sure that your protools session is also at 24 fps at the time you import the OMF. It is critical that you change the frame rate before you import otherwise you’re in for trouble. Like wise if at 23.98 in Final Cut then verify 23.976 in ProTools BEFORE the import.

    It is possible to fix this once you have done the mix but I would not recomend it unless it will take substantially less time than the mix did. It is not very fun and you need someone who is fast with PT and knows their stuff with sync.

    Include more about your setting specifically and I will try to help!

    How are you locking to picture in Protools? Just importing a quicktime in the timeline or something remote like VVTR or Satellite? I assume you are on a PT HD System.

    Tip. I Always put a visual and audible 2 pop at the head and tail of my timeline when using this workflow… write down the exact frames of those 2 pops and check them in every step of your project. (importing the OMF/Bouncing back your mix or stems and pulling into FCP)

    It takes a lot of headache from the end of the process and spreads it evenly across your whole post experience… kidding, kidding…

    I hope some of this might help in the future but I know if you have already mixed you are bummin’, let us know you settings and I will try to help you fix it!

    Want to throw in one quirky bit of information that might be attributing to your losing sync. By any chance were the audio files posted on an FTP server and then downloaded to your machine? If so, have your mixer ZIP the files and then re-post them to the FTP server. I saw this exact same thing happen on a show my friend was cutting. The audio starting slipping out of sync. We tried all sorts of things, but to no avail. We had the mixer repost the files, but this time he ZIPped them before posting. Downloaded, unzipped, problem gone. The mixer didn’t do anything different to the files, just Zipped them and posted. This is also recommended when sharing FCP project files via FTP, ZIP the file then post.

    one good way to maintain synch throughout is to also export
    a DV codec .mov file with timecode overlay so they can
    load that into pro-tools and ensure the pro-tools timecode
    and the dv .mov timecode match from start to finish.

    that way the .aif or .wav files you get MUST synch perfectly.

    That’s the only way I will do that kind of work, other wise
    you are in out-of-synch hell.
