Flashing light and motion blur are an absolute nightmare. Not sure that you can do anything but track forward and stop when it goes off the rails, manually fix until the tracker can follow again, etc.

I don’t know if it is worth a try but maybe some de-flicker type fix of the footage might help. Probably won’t.

While I haven’t done anything like this, the following would be my approach:

Shoot the person and their reflection on green screen background (behind the actor and the actor’s the reflection) in such a way that they are not overlapping. You may need to have the actor “walk” in place to give the idea she walks into the mirror. The actual horizontal movement will be added in AE. Separate both from background, move so that they overlap and it appears they are touching and animate one one way the reflection the other way while masking off anything that should disappear (anything beyond the symmetry plane) as the actor moves into the mirror. Create a static background plate so it looks like the background stays in place while the actor moves.

  • Not the fastest of solutions, but you can batch footage frames through Filter Forge. There’s a Droste Spiral in the filter library:

There’s a free trial if you haven’t installed it before.

If you saved the flattened images as PSD instead of TIFF in a new folder, you could move the old folder and point to the new folder.

You can batch convert to PSD in Photoshop.

You can create a slice with the slice tool and export for web, selected slice only.

  • The easiest approach to 3D from within After Effects is Element 3D. You can generate 3D extruded letters in it and integrate them with footage or other 3D models. I’d say it will be much simpler to use a 3D model of a basketball and align the letters to it. Learning Element 3D is about 50 times easier than learning a full 3D program. It is still pretty useless for me to try to explain how to do this before you know the basic of how to use it.

I would have guessed echo as my first guess as well. It could also be just a large number of copies of the same footage, turned into 3D layers and progressively offset in time and z-space, blended with add/screen/lighten.

  • What types of effects do you have? A better approach would be to figure out if and how those effects can be achieved without converting to shape layers.
