I fairly think that Adjust > Curves would be the perfect effect for this.

Maybe I’m wrong, but it’s my opinion.

I don’t know about AE 7.0, nor the CTRL+E (well, I never tried it for audio) but you can always press the dot on the numeric keypad once your audio track is in the timeline.

Why not use red contacts?

Seriously, if I were you, I’d film the actor, with no contacts, import it into AE, create a new solid (red), track it to the lens of the eye, add a little bit of feather and then play with the blending modes.
