  • Indeed install was exactly to specs. I’m curious if it has something to do with my computer. However, no other applications give me this problem. I remember on my old system that there was a specified amount of RAM recommended. I think it was 2gigs. As mentioned before now I have 16gigs. Do you think that could have something to do with it? I would certainly think not.

Listen to Duane! Spectra Matte is great, easy to use, and is quite forgiving. Otherwise Keylight in After Effects is a great keyer too. Just light your subject properly and digitize your footage and a very high res. DV footage is notoriously difficult to key.. 1:1 compression gives great results.

Andy, this is what the Avid documentation says to do as well but it does not work. This was one of the first things I tried. So far Adrian’s suggestion in the other Avid editing forum seems to work the best. Thank.

For those of you reading this thread I’d like to expand a bit on Adrian’s technique. Once the Reformat 16:9 letter box effect is on it’s own track and your footage looks “squished,” right click your Composer window and switch off “16:9” video. This allows you to view your footage with no distortion. Second, open your video output tool and in the “options” tab switch your down-convert to Anamorphic. This will allow you client monitor to have no distortion. As Adrian mentions this exports perfectly. Hope this thread help those who need it.

    Adrian…
Thanks so much. Your technique worked beautifully!!! It’s so strange that this is the method. This should be a no-brainer to get the desired output method but once again a work around is need to do very simple things in Avid. I do appreciate your help very much. I’m curious, are most people just exporting in their native HD resolutions and using Squeeze to down-convert the exported file to SD? Take care.

John have you tried this solution before… switching the project temporarily to SD? Is a standard workaround? I will try it as soon as Im back in the edit suite. Thanks.

Bob, so will the analog component outputs of the JVC-BRHD50U carry and HD signal? I guess I’m a little confused if that component serves as both an SD and HD output. I really appreciate you guys. Thanks for all your help.

Michael!!! Thanks so much for your detailed response. I will go through it step by step and iron out the wrinkles. This has been a great tip for not only discovering what these mystery mxf files are but also a great general insight as to how to take full advantage of the media tool. I hope anyone else reading this thread takes the time to read your advice. It is truly helpful and I appreciate it much. Thanks for all your help folks. Now back to editing!!!

Michael- I’m on a powermac dual 2gig running 10.4.11. Perhaps there is a utility or a stand alone player of some sorts? I’ve searched all over the web and have not come across one. Thanks fellas…\

Thanks for both of your answers guys. I really appreciate it. These two answers are great and work fine. Yet I’m curious, is there no way to import an .mxf directly from the hard drive location where it exists? I was cleaning off my media drives yesterday and found some huge mxf files that were digitized close to a year ago. I’m not sure what projects these files are associated with and the names of the clips are elusive. If I wanted to view just these particular clips to see what they were how could I go about importing them? Thanks and I hope I’m not sounding dense. Take care and I look forward to hearing from you fellow bovines.
