  • Thanks, Dennis. I may or may not have posted in a rage yesterday, forgetting the “never Cow while angry” rule. Anyway, cleaning the media cache worked. I’m pretty nervous this will happen in the future and when I least expect it, though. This sort of thing needs to be rock-solid before I use it in my workflow. If I can’t trust the media cache, I may just have to turn it off.

    I’ve tried to do a similar thing. I think what you’re going to have to do is use either a shape layer or a mask with a stroke effect. Then just animated the path. Make sense? Let me know how it works out.

    I didn’t chime in there, so I’ll chime in here:
    I work at a national sports network, and as a freelancer.

    At the network, we work on FC7 and are switching to Premiere at the end of the season.

    At home, I work on Premiere.

    For me: I’m an After Effects man, and though I do find Dynamic Link buggy, it’s sometimes useful.

    I have given FCX three significant tries, and it’s not yet for me. I actually really like the timeline–I find it pretty slick for the editing work I do. My issues with it are a sluggish interface that is a bit too bubbly/rounded and animation heavy(this makes auditions really irritating); oddities like the blade tool cutting either the previous or current frame; a handful of bugs that just made the process frustrating; and a subclipping system that doesn’t fit my workflow (I’m poor with a mouse, so hover-scrub is tough for me).

    Granted, Premiere’s subclipping system currently appears to be broken. I also find a lot of Premiere’s basic editing tools to be half-baked (in particular, I REALLY want a superimpose edit, a la FC7), and the software has its serious bugs. I need to give FCX another serious shot–maybe when the season is over I’ll cut another couple of projects in it. But, for now, as I’m really fast with tracks and I spend about 50% of my time in AE, Premiere is the right choice for me.

    Just my $29/month.

    Super slick workaround, Walter! I came up against this issue just yesterday–working with editors who really would struggle to go into AE and adjust the background box for some text. This would totally simplify the process. It also seems sort of future proof to me–not quite sure how Adobe could break that without messing with how expressions work.

  • Just to add to this much later…it does indeed appear to be a bug. Here’s what I’m doing:
    I’m having a similar problem to this and it’s basically making the titler useless for me.

    I have four subtitles.

    I build one, and try duplicating it in the following ways:

    1) alt-drag on timeline
    2) duplicate in browser

    I then edit and rename it. If it’s in the browser, I drag it to the timeline.

    With the titler closed and the current time indicator over the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th title in the timeline: it shows the current title superimposed on top of the original one. When I double click to edit the title, it only shows the current one. Dragging the current time indicator back and forth causes it to glitch–the background title disappears and reappears. when I render, the playback has that glitch as well.

    I’m using GPU acceleration on a last gen Mac Pro.

    Thanks, Michael:
    The biggest problem with that is that when I create paths from text, it creates many paths. I can’t paste all of those paths into the line’s paths. Also, it’s not exactly the look I’m aiming for, even for one letter: I’d like the line itself to wrap around into the outline, as opposed to separating into two lines as show below:

    Agreed. Though, if this is an actual font, you could probably get close to it with a scale, opacity, and position animator on a text layer.

    June 25, 2014 at 12:01 am in reply to: Staggered layer rotation with min/max

    Oh, so you’re basically polling the layer at a time earlier than it’s currently at? That’s a smart way to do it. But does it deal with my max and min issues?

    I actually ended up using the following if/then statement:

    r = thisComp.layer("Controls").effect("Y Rotation")("Slider") - index*thisComp.layer("Controls").effect("Y Rotation Delay")("Slider")

    if (r<0) { r=0; }
    else if (r>900) { r=900; }

    Hey George–sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner! That was a great suggestion, and I ended up using it to some degree. Thanks!!

  • Ah, ok…seems a bit to funny to me, as I thought the point of cineware was to import the C4D renderer into AE?
