You are right, the Content Manegement Utility does not disply the TC. We are currently studying what to do next… Should we use engineering resources to patch CMU to make it read TC or should we create something new?

    Hello,

Let me clarify. All HXR-NX5, from the very fisrt one, record time code following the AVCHD specification (embeded in the MPEG-4 stream). Some NLE do not read the TC. I am not in liberty to speack for the NLE companies, but what I can say is… expect dot releases; this issue is being addressed by those NLE manufacturers. The SMPTE TC of all preexisting files shot with your NX5 will readable by these updated versions.

March 26, 2009 at 7:37 pm in reply to: New EX3s shipping with tripod mounting

    Hello,

I would like to post a clarification regarding a rumor of “replacement part packs for the EX3 tripod plate mount”… The EX3 design team received user feedback requesting the EX3 stability be improved with certain tripod plates and rail systems. To that effect, two changes were implemented:

•The contact surface was elongated by adding a wedge to the front bottom.
•The threaded plate has now two 1/4-20 threaded holes for greater torque stability with tripod plates and rail systems that allow two screws instead of just one.

These optional parts are included in current production EX3 as a user installable kit, and will be available to existing customers through Sony Parts for a small shipping and handling fee. Please check the Ex webpage https://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/micro-xdcamexsite/ where an announcement with directions for acquiring the kit will be posted in about two weeks.

I have not tried this yet, but it is now possible to import EX with Log and Transfer too. Download the plug-in below from the web.

If I’m not mistaken, SnapZ Pro X is a “screen capture” utility. The image is being decoded by some software application and re encoded. My guess is that you are seeing is the effect of concatenation losses. Try capturing to Final Cut directly. I belive that you will not experience the same issue.

Actually, the Ex1 outputs honest to goodness 10-bit 4:2:2 at all resolutions via its built-in HDSDI/ SDI interface.

Now, a word about “color space”. In the old SD days, 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 had absolute meaning and direct correlation to the picture quality (luminance and color resolution). In the case of HD, 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 are relative. Thus, these ratios have no “real” meaning anymore. Therefore, it would be possible for an HD format with small luminance and color spatial resolution to claim 4:2:2… so, the only way to compare is to count the actual captured pixel resolution. Once, you know the exact number of luminance pixels stored, you can apply the ratio to compare apples to apples (for a given aspect ratio).

For compositing, all that is necessary is for color sampling to be tight enough for the keyer to effectively detect the edges. You will find that Ex captures 960 color pixels in the horizontal direction capturing a higher color resolution than some HD formats. The color sampling is also halved in the vertical to 540, which is still suitable for good keying. Lastly, at the core of modern compositing engines are sophisticated keying algorithms that even look at luminance transitions to more accurately detect the edges. Please try keying with Ex 4:2:0. I believe you will be surprised how good keys you will be able to achieve.

Sorry for the long winded reply. I hope it helps.

January 4, 2008 at 8:12 pm in reply to: Sony EX1…”NO HOLES BARRED REVIEW”

Hi, this is Juan Martinez from Sony. Actually, if you pivot the hand-grip forward at about a 45 degree angle and place your left-hand thumb under the camera, the Ex1 is not uncomfortable to hold. Please try it.

I was also told (by an user) that by using the large battery, he could rest the camera on his chest while looking into the viewfinder…
