JPEG2000 might do it, but the file size restriction is odd. Trying to get it under 10 MB might sacrifice too much quality.

If you duplicate the composition in the project panel – not in the timeline – you can change the main picture in one composition but not in the other.

    [Walter Soyka]
There is no H.264 profile that accommodates those widths. A compliant encoder will not make these files.

In my experience, wide displays like this are often pre-split, but of course it depends on the playback system.”

Yes, H.264 won’t cut it, I’m using the older mpeg-4 through Compressor, which works. And, yes, the video will actually be split in half, with two sincronized devices controlling 3 monitors each for the 8160 pixels wide one and two for the 5440 one.
However, the client wants the full sized file so they can “preview” how it would look, despite the fact they’ll have to scale it down to actually see it. Oh, well…

[Dave LaRonde] “It is wise to get all of the delivery specifications BEFORE these decisions.

The most importanty consideration is this: how will your AE animation be played back? You mention multiple screens: what is/are the playback device(s)? What kind of files do these devices require? At what frame rate must you work?

I think you are a long way away from deciding on one or more mp4 files.

Well, you are right of course, about potential issues with these delivery specifications. Mainly, whether they playback system, which I guess it’s a PC, can deal with these high resolutions and bitrates without stuttering. So far, I’m assuming the client knows what he’s asking (yep, that part is probably naive), so I’m working with the resolutions they’ve asked and the .mp4 wraper they also asked. But the client specifically asked for a single .mp4 file.

  • [Daniel Crooks] “so, I don’t have any effects whatsoever it’s just a single video file that has been cut up (masked) and placed around the frame (128 layers), no expressions, no blending modes nothing. I really thought the clock speed increase would result in a linearly proportional render time decrease

I hadn’t been expecting render times to be halved like in C4D as i don’t have the RAM to max the CPUs but I had expected a little more than 13%.”

I might be wrong, but isn’t that taxing the hard drives more than the processors? The cpu is just applying the mask, but the hard drives are tasked with retrieving the file.

  • Well, apparently, FCP7 works in the developer preview.

It’s not going to be officially supported, but IIRC that’s also true for OSX 10.8

  • [Greg Jones] “1. It looks like the power button is on the ‘Back’ of the computer. If you were to put this in a rack or even on your desk, you would have to reach around the back to turn on the computer. In some environments this might be difficult to do.

    2. Graphics. Right now the graphics on the machine are pretty awesome, but in 1 or 2 years they will probably be obsolete. If the GPU’s are soldered on, we’re pretty much screwed on updating. The only thing that has kept my 2008 Mac Pro alive, is that I’ve been able to update the graphics card and hard drive to SSD. The new Mac Pro seems like it would be stuck in time.

    3. Memory. Looks like there are only 4 memory slots. This may not be a big deal if it takes 16GB or 32GB memory modules, but I’m not even sure those exist.

*I think* they’ve mentioned up to 128GB of ram, so the four slots shouldn’t be a big deal. I also think the GPUs are interchangeable but, given their custom design, only the ‘genius bar’ or other kind of official technical support are likely to be able to change them.

In any event, a business not using Mac only software such as Final Cut or Smoke is better of with a PC workstation.

[Brooks Tomlinson] “One of the things keeping me from an iMAC, (besides it not being powerful enough) is the lack of user replaceable hard drive. I mean really, have you looked at how hard it is to access iMac’s HD? I have had bad luck with HD, and want that quick turn around in case something goes wrong. That’s why I bought a retina over the iMac, at least I could replace/upgrade the harddrive. I’ve allways had good luck with ram, so I tend to error to replacing HD ease vs. ram.

It looks like replacing ram and hd in the mac pro will be a snap. (as long as they don’t solder it in place. that would piss me off)

the word on the street is they gfx is solder? anyone confirm?

    Brooks Tomlinson
    “I dream in 32bit float””
I don’t think anyone can confirm until at least pre-production units are given to specialized press or something. I think I’ve read somewhere that the gfx could be replaced. However, as they are probably using some kind of custom made interface/connector, I’d say it’s very likely only Apple will have replacement gpus and they won’t sell them to the public for a bit of DIY

I’d say you need to specify 720×480 with NTSC DV pixel aspect ratio (which is about 0.909)
