Are you saying that it won’t render? Or, are you outputting to tape, DVD, taking it to another facility for onlining/outputting or what? What codec did you capture in? What codec is your sequence?

Have you captured the footage yet? Why not just use one of the HDV codecs? It should work fine…Once you choose an easy setup, THEN create/add a new sequence to project and it will automatically be the same format as what you have captured. If you’ve already captured the footage, you’ve probably already seen that when you drop the footage to any timeline, you are asked if you want to change the codec of the sequence to that of the footage.

That’s a pretty big difference. If i can swing it, i’ll certainly try for the 8-core. What are your currents thoughts on backup and archival? Time Machine vs. a Drobo, vs. maybe tape backup…or waiting for the thing that comes after Blu-Ray? Holographic storage? Bubble Memory? Strange things are come for sure i suppose.

Oh, and what do you all think of AppleCare? I bought it on my G5 4 years ago, but like most extended warranties, never got the mileage out of it. . . but good insurance just the same i suppose.

One other thing . . . that will probably sound a bit Andy Rooney-ish: Did you ever notice how Apple calls it “Quad-core” and “8-core”? I mean, why not “Quad and Octo”, or “4 and 8?” Or maybe even for out brothers to the south, “Quatro and Ocho”?

Ya, I have a client who insists they want to send out an “imbedded” 80 second video via email to potential clients of theirs, and i am trying to persuade them the best option is still to simply send a link to a better quality video either on their own website, FTP site, or even a YouTube link. Be that as it may, my best smallest file I’ve been able to make is an mp4, but it is still 10MB, too big for emailing, and pretty small for good viewing. Any other ideas for a client who still insists on an emailed video? The other option i use for larger files is to upload it to YouSendIt which has worked pretty well.

Thanks again guys for such quick responses. Maybe a better option would be for me to do a sort of batch process of all these files into something much smaller (they would just be for client viewing, and maybe logging) and more “universally” readable on a PC. If so, what might be the best codec for that?…or is that even feasible since they would still be going through FCP…

Thanks so much for the detailed response! The audio channel selection was a great tip, but I still wasn’t able to change the name of the disk. No big deal though, i’m just dragging all the content from each disc into a folder with the name that was written on the disc, even though none of the discs were digitally named. I tried renaming within the XDCam transfer window, but couldn’t. My typing didn’t even show up in the window. In Finder, I right-click on the drive/disc and see that I can “read only”, even with the save lock slid over. Oh well. No big deal.

5) does it matter if all the thumbnails have loaded and updated themselves onto the capture screen after first invoking XDCam Transfer, or can i just go ahead and say “select all” and “import”? it SEEMS to not matter, but just making sure if anyone has seen a problem with this…

Hi Eamon,

I spend WAY more time on this forum asking questions rather than answering, so it is nice to be able to answer someone with what i think will be very helpful.

In 2007, we did our first show shot on XDCam (full size discs, not the EX chippies) and HDV. I worked on and XDCam timeline sequence, and upon completion of each episode, rendered out a single DVCProHD file, took that file on my trusty LaCie drive to my local post house and we dumped the DVCProHD file into their FCP system without a hitch and outputted (2) HDCam master tapes for HD broadcast. This worked great every time (as long as I rendered everything correctly).

The client only wanted an SD DVD copy of each show, so back at my place i would drop the single DVCProHD file into an SD timeline, output a nice SD Quicktime file (with chapter breaks of course!), then dropped it into Compressor, and voila! Beautiful SD DVD’s, happy client.

I’m about to embark on a new show with identical production formats and was just perusing the forum to see what has changed in the XDCam / FCP workflows, and it appears that nothing really has, except maybe that Sony has improved the XDCam Transfer software a bit. I’m going to dig around and see if it will save me any time to work with the proxies (which i’ve never done before), or if i should just keep it in full XDCam mode all the way through post. If you hear anything on that note, let me know.
