I’m finally resolved that i need to move from my G5 to the Mac Pro. I know going to just the “bottom of the line” Quad-core will give me light years of improvement over where i was, but are you all seeing a huge difference between the 4-core and the 8-core? I’ve had a few conversations about backup, and one guy stressed that the Drobo might be better than just using Time Machine (which i haven’t used yet either). I’ll also replace our family PC (the last one in the house, YA!) with ye olde G5. What are your thoughts on the 4-core vs. 8-core, the standard graphics card that comes with each, and the long term backup/storage solutions. Also, anyone wanna sell a used Mac Pro? : )

    Thanks again!

[J. Tad Newberry] “but are you all seeing a huge difference between the 4-core and the 8-core?”

Almost double and sometimes triple the render speed, especially for things like Compressor and Episode Pro. Much faster renders with ProRes timelines too.

That’s my 3.2 Octo Core Mac Pro vs. my 3.0 Quad Core Mac Pro.

    Thanks for the reply Walter,

That’s a pretty big difference. If i can swing it, i’ll certainly try for the 8-core. What are your currents thoughts on backup and archival? Time Machine vs. a Drobo, vs. maybe tape backup…or waiting for the thing that comes after Blu-Ray? Holographic storage? Bubble Memory? Strange things are come for sure i suppose.

Thanks again for your time and input. This bonehead really appreciates it.

Oh, and what do you all think of AppleCare? I bought it on my G5 4 years ago, but like most extended warranties, never got the mileage out of it. . . but good insurance just the same i suppose.

One other thing . . . that will probably sound a bit Andy Rooney-ish: Did you ever notice how Apple calls it “Quad-core” and “8-core”? I mean, why not “Quad and Octo”, or “4 and 8?” Or maybe even for out brothers to the south, “Quatro and Ocho”?

    c’est la vie…

    Thanks again!

[J. Tad Newberry] “What are your currents thoughts on backup and archival?”

We buy raw SATA drives and archive to them. When they’re full, put them on the shelf until the client needs them. All the data is entered into our database so we can find it relatively quickly.

[J. Tad Newberry] “Oh, and what do you all think of AppleCare? “

I purchase it for every single computer I own. Generally don’t need it on the Mac Pros as I have never had to take them in for anything, but I buy it anyway. Now iMacs and laptops, I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of those machines and repairs. iPhone tool
