  • Thanks!!

  • There is a great script called KeyEd Up that works pretty well. Can’t seem to find it after a google search but I can send you mine if you like

  • [dallas kruse] “My question is … like FCP 7, do I need to transcode my video files before I start to edit in Premiere CC/Premiere CS6 for better editing/rendering?”

Yes and no. In my experience it just depends on how much footage your project will have. If it’s a relatively small project, the raw camera files will do just fine. However, as you probably know h.264 is an interframe codec, meaning most frames are referencing other frames around it. So it is a lot of information for your machine to process in order to display a frame. Depending on your specs, once you start to build timelines that are around 10 minutes in length, with multiple video tracks, you might start to experience noticeable lag

  • Hmmm. We were having a lot of Premiere issues in our office with the first CC 2014 release. Didn’t play back video, lots of crashes, etc. AE and most of the suite was fine, just not Premiere. With the latest release, all of the problems are basically solved. We still have a few crashes from time to time, but not out of the ordinary and certainly not enough to make it unusable. Specs:

    iMac 27″ Late 2012
    Intel Core i7 3.4 GHz
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
    OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

2 other machines we have are classic Mac Pros, I’m not sure of the exact specs but they are all on OSX 10.8.5, ~16GB RAM and decent video cards. We haven’t upgraded to Yosemite, and will probably hold off on doing so for as long as possible. Right now our workflow is pretty stable and there are no features in Yosemite that make it worth the risk of upgrading.

Back in the CS6 (maybe even CS5) days I would take a project from back and forth from Mac to PC with no issues whatsoever. I can only imagine it has stayed equally smooth. Just make sure you have all necessary fonts on both machines and the same version of any 3rd party plugins

Well I do more work for the web than for TV, but as far as I understand there is still no universal rule for what will happen. While you can be sure that at this point the large majority of home viewers have 16×9 TV’s you cannot be sure that they all have brand new models from trustworthy manufacturers such as Sony, LG, etc, nor do they have it calibrated properly. I have seen plenty of TV’s at friends’ houses that clearly have zoomed in on the image, and no matter what settings I change for them it cannot properly fill the screen without being stretched. Not to mention many people may have changed their TV settings to crop or zoom a certain way when watching something like a 4×3 DVD, and maybe have never changed it back. Not to mention there are cases like mine where my work goes through a local affiliate that JUST got HD broadcasting, so I have a hard time trusting that their broadcasting equipment/techniques are proper.

TL;DR It’s still not safe to put critical information outside the safe zone

I don’t know if the new Mac Pros have a speaker somewhere on the can, but if you are running a silver tower I would unplug all audio and do some editing just using the on board speaker or maybe just headphones and see if you encounter the same issue. I have Premiere drop audio on me fairly regularly, but only for a few seconds, never 5-10 minutes

Video copilot has a free script called 3D precomp that should help you out here.
