    Hi All:

We use Premiere Pro CC on a Mac Pro 2.7GHz Core Intel Xeon E5 with 64Gigs of Ram, most of the time connected via Fiber to our shared storage. Occasionally we use it with thunderbolt or USB 3 drives. The problem we have is that too many times the audio will not play, we know we have audio in our timeline, we see the meters, we know everything is routed correctly because we just heard the audio the last time we played it but it suddenly stops playing. Even restarting sometimes both software and computer does not fix it. It just starts playing again randomly on its own. This usually lasts 5 to 10 minutes.

So we think it’s a Premiere issue not a hardware issue. This is very frustrating since most our jobs are done with clients in the room. For this reason we are thinking of switching to Avid for editorial so I am asking the Gurus here for any advice on why this could be happening and checking if more people out there have the same problem.

Thank you all for the help!

What version of Premiere CC (2014 or 7.2.2)?

Is that a new Mac Pro or old Silver Tower?

What IO hardware….. AJA or BMD?

Have you checked your preferences / audio hardware to make sure you are routed correctly?

Is Enable Mercury Transmit box checked in Preferences / Playback?

I believe that this is a premiere issue. I have had the same thing happen here frequently. The audio always returns but it is extremely frustrating. I have been working with Premiere now for two years and really like it, except for the many audio issues.

Adobe please step up and address this.

    Mac Pro 8 core
    AJA Kona card
    nVideo GX650 graphics

Have you set up your preferences to use the system line out audio vs. AJA Kona card? I have over 20 edit systems with Kona cards and we use the system line out audio in OSX preferences and the audio never disappears in Premiere. If you have AJA Kona selected for Output in Audio preferences of Mac OS and AJA Kona set in Premiere for output you are going to have audio disappear. AJA has a tech support doc on this, but I cannot locate it at the moment. Try running the audio out of the Macs line out jack into your mixer and reconfigure your Premiere settings.

I don’t know if the new Mac Pros have a speaker somewhere on the can, but if you are running a silver tower I would unplug all audio and do some editing just using the on board speaker or maybe just headphones and see if you encounter the same issue. I have Premiere drop audio on me fairly regularly, but only for a few seconds, never 5-10 minutes

For me the audio issue is a total disaster and if somebody doesn’t fix it soon, I will have to switch my four workstations to some other system.

    Thank you all for responding.

I have a brand new mac pro, this is not a preference issue, all those are set correctly inPremiere the AJA cards works fine with other software. Audio will work fine 75% of the times in Premiere Pro CC when I press play, the rest 25% it will not play at all or it will crackle or just skip frames.

We never had this issue with FCP 7 with the same hardware so that leads me to believe it’s not a hardware problem. My next step is to buy an Avid which I will do in the next couple of weeks when we slow down and see if with the same hardware configuration the audio does not fail on me. We also use Autodesk Smoke in the same machine with exactly the same hardware and the audio never has any problems so everything is leading me to reason that Adobe Premiere is having a problem that we just can’t put up with. My session yesterday with a client was embarrassing. I just upgraded all my computers to the top of the line macs, connected via fiber to our SAN storage but the audio issue makes us look like amateurs.

I am so disappointed with Adobe, we also get kicked out of the cloud constantly and need to re-sign in. If it weren’t because there is nothing to replace AE I would ditch the whole cloud thing without a doubt. Their support is also terrible, a guy in India that usually has no clue what you are talking about and points to the re-seller for all questions and issues.

    Thanks for all your help.
