    I couldn’t tell by your post, but I’m assuming your are just capturing SD over component. Also is it true that you are outputting native resolution, that is, you are not upconverting the output (still shouldn’t be an issue)?

    So if the HDMI out looks okay and just the analog or component is looking like this then my guess is that either breakout cable is bad (or some cable on the component is bad) or the card itself is bad.

    So easiest thing is to troubleshoot the cables. Make sure you are not using composite cables (Yellow, Red, White) as they are not suitable for component use. Also make sure all the RCA’s fit tightly. If they are tight, give them a wiggle while you are playing back and see if the image flickers.

    If it does turn out that the breakout cable is bad or the board for that matter, provided you are in warranty we can gladly help you replace that. Just give our office a call and we can clarify a bit better.

    I’ve got a few of them running in my lab no problems what so ever.

    Overall, I’m a bit dis-satisfied with the minimum specs on the graphics cards, they were speced before the composite and zoom features were released and they add a little load. Of course, running in the “2up” view is quite a bit less demanding. But still I’d like to update those a bit.

    But in short, My setups in my office work great on Win7 (just personal experience).

    Well, it’s not a marketing ploy. And you make decent points, nobody is discounting that. But you are only looking at it from your personal perspective (which is to be expected).

    The long and the short of it is that we have good reasons to sell it the way we’ve decided to sell it. And that doesn’t mean that things can’t ever change in the future after all, we are known for re-writing the book when it comes to typical process.

    Right now it just means that we’ll have to agree to disagree, I know it’s cliché. But for now, let us get the thing selling.

    First off you have to understand. Blackmagic isn’t charging the difference in cost. The integrators are, and rightly so. We sell the panel and software to the integrators who then put the system together.

    That’s why we publish the cost of the panel. No hidden cost. And the panels are the same for both system. I don’t just mean the price, the panels are literally the same.

    What you are paying for is more than just the panels and a mark up. The guys integrating this system have to be able to supply parts and support the hardware in these high end installations. All of that takes money above and beyond the COGS.

    So it’s easy to look at the system and say “Man, that’s one hell of a mark up.” But remember that these are being delivered turnkey and will be supported by the guys you buy them from. Where as the Macs you can buy off the shelves and get them up and running. If a part goes down you just call up apple and get the return worked out. It’s not as simple for the Linux version

    Sure, it’s easy enough to build your own system. But building it right is another matter. There are many macs out there with different graphics cards too. But you’ll notice that we are being very specific on which of those you need to use as well.

    The fact is that it is relatively easy to build up a Mac to work, because all the parts are the same and there is so little variation. Assembling a you are more likely to get it right than you are to get it wrong.

    And I am not disagreeing with the fact that it might be easy for an experienced integrator to build that rig (even if some parts will be hard to get a hold of). But ultimately this is how we have chosen to sell the Linux version.

    And please don’t make the mistake of thinking the guys selling these Linux versions are simple resellers. They are not. They do much more as i’ve stated before. They are very closely connected to the industry and will provide services (such as assembly, integration, and installation) that BMD is not going to be providing.

    The way we are selling the Linux version of Resolve is not meant to be an insult, it’s just the way we’ve decided to do it after thinking of the pro’s and cons.

    Not at all. It was one of our big issues with the industry. Before you could talk to someone on Monday and get a quote for 100K and the two days latter billy down the street would get the quote for 90K. By publishing the price of BMD product, you know what you are paying. The only thing is that we only sell that part to our selected integrators.

    Putting it in a turnkey is the only way to ensure that the build quality is kept up. Everything about that system has to be setup properly. And that’s what the integrators do. They also offer training, and service agreements and installation services. Basically everything you’ll need to get up and running and stay running.

    What’s the big deal anyways as its just a off-the-shelf PC built to spec to run a piece of software… no voodoo… only black magic 🙂

    And here…you are mostly right. But also wrong. Some of those parts cannot even be sourced by the general public. So it’s not so easy as you might think to build an off the shelf PC. And if you bought one (say a HP) chances are it would have a host of other issues, like not supporting enough slots or having enough power for the additional graphics cards.

    The build is specific. The software is tested with that build. This is part of the reason we can do it on Mac because there is almost no hardware variation. But you start throwing different power supplies, memory and cases with different thermal dynamics and the situation gets more…..complex.

    Okay…so lot’s of responses. Nothing of major substance…just some clarification.

    You would have to use any ultrascope on it’s own computer. Cheapest way is to build a micro ATX luggable (or something similar). They’re cheap (like 1600 with the ultrascope card). But there is a beta version of the software that will work on the Mac OSX builds. Of course you can’t run this simultaneously to the resolve, but if you say, had an extra MacPro laying around you could use it thusly. Problem is…that’s an expensive way to go for scopes.

    As for the USB 3 stuff. The issue isn’t the Mac drivers, there is simply no hardware available yet for USB3 on a Mac.

    As for Linux to Mac port, (I’m no engineer) but from what i’m told that was a fairly straight forward process, something that could not be done as easily on the Windows side.

    Eh…not sure.

    We have not tested it and therefore won’t meet our minimum specs. And while we don’t do any specific cuda processing on the GUI board there is processing that is done on the GUI side that requires a “beefy” bit of card. So my guess is that while it might work, it might not work well.

    There has been no update on that particular issue. At this time I do not believe it has been put into the development cycle. So essentially there is no new headway on supporting 8bit 4:4:4.

    The current HD Extreme 3D is physically not capable of frame packed HDMI capture/playback and is not something we can update on the card.

    Not without using the SDK to write your own app.

    Probably a less complicated way of doing that would be to create a “C” bracket where the camera can use it’s normal mount in an upright position but still have the anchor above the camera. That of course may not be feasible for your specific situation, but it was just a thought.
